Every boy in the program will be eligible to compete in the City Elementary Wrestling tournament. At the conclusion of the season it is hoped that each child will have had the opportunity to wrestle at least eight to ten matches. Wrestling with maturity
Jim Cummings

This was not a particularly good article. The heading “Wrestling with maturity” was not much of a “hook”. Fortunately the article did have a picture.

Every parent knows, young boys are just busting at the seams to prove to each other who’s the strongest and who can best emulate their heroes from television wrestling programs. Since jumping off the top rope and throwing an elbow isn’t the safest way to do it, Greensburg Elementary School is implementing a new program that satisfies the hunger to grapple and teaches a few life lessons at the same time. The mission of the Challenge program is to provide a comprehensive, integrated developmental program of progressive training in the fundamental techniques of amateur wrestling. The intent is to foster a healthy competitive attitude based on personal improvement, physical fitness, emotional maturity and mental toughness. “Wrestling is one of the greatest activities young boys can participate in,” said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Dennis Goldberg. “Every parent aspires to have their son grow up healthy, strong, self confident and to be able to compete and succeed in a variety of environments. There’s no practical way of achieving that all with one activity but wrestling comes close.” Goldberg says wrestling does this by instilling the values of training, preparation and discipline into the wrestlers at an early age. “It’s all about preparation and paying attention to the coaches,” he said. “Once they get on the mat, the matches are one-on-one with just a referee there. The kids have to motivate themselves to do well because they don’t have any teammates to blame.” He should know. Goldberg was a high school varsity wrestling coach with a record of 150-25, won 137 matches himself at Indiana State University, where he was a team captain, and was honored as a four time All-American. In addition, he was a finalist for the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team where he finished third in trials. GCS has had an elementary wrestling program for several years but this year’s program will be very different and highly organized, Goldberg said. They will also be offering the program to students who attend St. Mary’s School. “Our wrestling programs of the past were more exploratory. There, the kids just got together and were coached in large groups with a few, periodic matches thrown in,” Goldberg said. “Now, it’s time to take this to another level. It is the aspiration of the Greensburg School Board to make this program a model for all sports.” In addition to the coaching, wrestlers will also be using technology to help them improve. “We want to use all of the resources the corporation has,” Goldberg said. “We’ll provide instructional DVDs and put videos of the wrestling moves on our Website. This will be a monumental leap forward in how we deal with our elementary sports programs.”
