Roanoke College, the country’s second oldest Lutheran-related college, is an independent,
coeducational, four-year liberal arts college. Its 1,900 students represent Virginia, 40 states

The Roanoke Higher Education Center, which has been hailed as a model for education in the
new millennium, offers nearly 200 programs of study through the Center’s partner organizations.
Averett University, Bluefield College, Jefferson College of Health Sciences, Ferrum College,
Hampton University, Hollins University, Mary Baldwin College, Old Dominion University,
Radford University, Roanoke College, TAP - This Valley Works job training programs, the
University of Virginia, Virginia Intermont College, Virginia Tech, and Virginia Western
Community College offer undergraduate and graduate level courses. The New Century
Technology Council and the Western Virginia Workforce Development Board are also located at
the Center.
In August 2000, the Roanoke Center welcomed its first class of 2,500 students to newly
renovated classrooms located in the former headquarters of the Norfolk and Western Railroad in
downtown Roanoke. A total of $19 million in state, local and private capital, as well as federal
and state historic tax credits, had been used to transform the 1931 Art Deco building into a state-
of-the-art facility for learning.

Founded in 1872 as a land-grant college named Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College,
Virginia Tech is now a comprehensive, innovative research university with the largest full-time
student population in Virginia (27,619).
VT consists of eight colleges and agraduate school offering 60 bachelor’s degree programs and
140 master’s and doctoral degree programs. 16:1 student faculty ratio. Its main campus is 2,600
acres including 100+ buildings and an airport. Worldwide information access is provided via
computing and communications complex. Ranked 56th in university research in the US. Has an
adjacent corporate research center.

VWCC is a two-year public institution of higher education serving Roanoke, Salem, Roanoke
County, Craig County, southern Botetourt County, and northern Franklin County. Day, evening,
and weekend classes are provided on a 70-acre campus located in Southwest Roanoke. Classes
are also offered at off-campus locations in the area. Established in 1966, it has grown from an
initial enrollment of 1,352 to a current enrollment of over 9,000.
