STEGANOGRAPHY

Introduction
•It is an Art and science of communicating in a way that it
hides the existence of a message.

•The concept behind steganography is that the hidden
message should be embed in to the cover medium.

•We can hide the message by using a key called stego key.
without stego key intruder does not have slight chance to
change the information.

cover medium+ hidden message+ stego key =stego medium

                                                              Page 7
Classic techniques
• Invisible ink (1st century AD - WW II).
• Microdots to secreting a hidden message in the 2nd letter
of each word of a large body of text.
• Spread spectrum radio communication.
• In computers and networking:
       covert channels.
       Hidden text within web pages.
Null cipers (1st letter of each word is used to form a
                   hidden message).

                                                                Page 8
Null Cipher
• Hide message among irrelevant data.
• Confuse the cryptanalyst .

The goal of steganography
• Hide the message inside other “harmless”
message in a way that does not allow an intruder
to even detect that there is a 2nd message exist.

• It is also supports the data to be embed into
   – Images
   – Audio files
   – Video files
   – Documents

• Confidential communication and secret data
  storing.

                                                  Page 11
Applications
• Corporate espionage.
• The first hiding technique is employed for
  armies.
• Used by law enforcement agencies by
  intelligence.
• Used for terrorist and criminal activities.
• Providing copy right for digital water
  marking.

                                                Page 12
Steganography vs. watermarking
Goal of steganography:

 – Intruder cannot detect a message.
 – Primarily 1:1 communication.

Goal of watermarking:

 – Intruder cannot remove or replace the message.
 – Primarily 1:many communication.

                                              Page 13
Steganography vs. Cryptogaphy
Steganography:

- The art of secret (hidden) writing.
- It hides the message so it cannot be seen.

Cryptography:

- The art of solving or writing cipers.
- It scrambles the message so it cannot be
understand.
