Fashion Style Icons
Aside from fashion designers there are always other key players in the fashion world that influence followers of fashion.....style icons. Icons from the
past have included Lauren Bacall, James Dean, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, David Bowie and Madonna. More recently celebrities
such as Kate Moss, Sarah Jessica Parker, Chloe Sevigny, the Olsen twins, Victoria Beckham and Cheryl Cole have had many ardent fashionistas
clambering over themselves to emulate their wardrobes! However it's not just movie stars and famous musicians that become fashion icons, as
women in politics are closely followed too.
First Ladies such as Jackie Onassis and now Michelle Obama are seen as popular style icons, as is French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy - who is a
former fashion model and singer. Michelle Obama has been praised for her fashion sense. She prefers to champion young designers as well as
wearing high street brands, which means for example her followers can pick up the same cardigan or skirt without breaking the bank! I'm told that
these make hot women's christmas gifts as well!
But for the average person who can't afford to splash out on designer garb every week, thanks the high street stores you can at least get something
similar, and for a fraction of the price too! Fashion magazines are a great source for such information. They're great for telling us how we can
‘recreate' catwalk and celebrity looks on a budget and where we can find key pieces on the high street.
But how influential are style icons? Do we really let stars influence what we wear? Of course not. Everyone is into the latest trends, as fashion is such
a personal choice. But for those who hang on every coat tail and hem there are magazines, websites and TV programs just itching to tell us what the
‘latest' look is and where you can get your fashion loving mittens on them.
A great example of this happens annually at one of the biggest catwalk parades of the year - the Oscars! Here the world's press are waiting with baited
breath to see what dresses and designer attire the celebrities have chosen to wear. There are companies that specialise in replicating red carpet
fashion. Within seconds of appearing on the red carpet a team will begin designing and recreating the styles, which will be finished inside just a few
hours. So a dress worn by Julia Roberts at the Oscars could be worn by you the very next day, oh and for a fraction of the price of what the original
one would have cost too!
Whatever you fashion sense is, it's a pretty reasonable assumption to make that everyone at some point in their lives have worn something which was
influenced by either a fashion icon, TV, film or music star. Even those who profess not to follow fashion, what is hanging in their wardrobe will have
been influenced at some point somewhere by a top fashion designer, it's just a filtered down version!
