 A.1      Driver/Passenger Seats and Seat Belts:

 SECTION B - STEERING & SUSPENSION

 B.1      Steering Wheel Tests:

          On vehicles equipped with power steering, the
          engine must be running and the fluid level, belt
          tension and condition must be adequate before
          testing.

          Lash:

          a.   With front wheels straight ahead, turn         a.          Total movement, greater than that shown in the

 B.2      Front Wheel Bearings & Spindles

       Bearings:

          With front end of the vehicle raised off floor,
          attempt to move wheel relative to the spindle by
          using a bar for leverage. The relative movement
          between the brake drum and the backing plate or
          dust cover determines bearing maladjustment or
          wear. Visually and manually inspect:

          a.        movement                                   a.    movement measured at circumference of tire
                                                                     exceeds
                                                                     - 3 mm (0.125 in.) if GVWR 10,000# or less
                                                                     - 5 mm (0.188 in.) if GVWR over 10,000#
 Note: To properly inspect for damage, bearings should be
        removed, cleaned and repacked at this time.

          b.        damage                                     b.    races or rollers are chipped, burred, pitted or
                                                                     show evidence of overheating

          c.        lubrication                                c.    insufficient lubrication

       Spindles:

 Variance for low-use units
 If an ambulance has travelled less than 4000 kilometers
 since its last inspection and the front wheel bearings have
 been cleaned, inspected and repacked within the past 12
 months, the requirement to remove and repack the
 bearings is waived. The technician may check for
 excessive movement as it (a) above and assess the
 bearings’ condition while rotating the wheel.

 B.3      Steering Linkage:
          With engine shut down, rock the steering wheel
          left and then right and observe movement in
          steering components. Visually and manually
          inspect:

                                                                     specifications.

                                                                     - horizontal play exceeds 6 mm (0.250 in.)

          k.       adjusting sleeve                        k.        bent, tightening bolt positioned so as steering
                                                                     can be jammed or contacted; loose beyond OEM
                                                                     specifications.

                                                                i)    steering column
                                                                      - any bolts loose or missing; any positioning
                                                                        parts allow movement from the column’s
                                                                        normal position
                                                                     - any universal joints are field welded
                                                                      - steering wheel is not secure

                                                                 ii) steering box
                                                                     - any mounting bolts are loose or missing
                                                                      - any frame or mounting bracket is loose

                                                                 iii) pitman arm
                                                                      - loose beyond OEM specifications on steering
                                                                        gear output shaft spline or field welded

                                                                 iv) ball and sockets
                                                                     - any joint with movement in excess of 3.2 mm
                                                                       (0.125 in.) within the shank or neck of the ball
                                                                     - nuts loose on tie rod ends, pitman arm, drag
                                                                       link, or steering arm

 B.4      Rack & Pinion Steering:

          Raise the front of the vehicle, grasp the tie rod          - Inspection reveals wear and/or movement beyond

 B.6      Kingpin Play:

         Raise vehicle so as to unload kingpins.
         Brakes should be applied to eliminate wheel-
         bearing play.

         With a dial indicator or a fixed device placed at
         the wheel, tape measure and using a bar for
         leverage, attempt to rock the wheel in and out.

         Visually inspect:

          d.        horizontal movement                         a.        horizontal movement exceeds OEM
                                                                          specifications. If no OEM spec available:
                                                                          - 5mm (0.188”) on wheels 405mm (16”) or more
                                                                          - 3mm (0.125”) on wheels less than 405mm (16”)

                                                                          If no OEM spec available, 2.5mm (0.100”)

          With use of a pry bar and using the frame as a
          pivot, attempt to pry spring attachments and
          check for movement. Visually inspect:


          a.       springs                                 a.          - any leaf broken or sagged so as to allow
                                                                         contact to be made with the rebound rubber in
                                                                         normal operation with normal loading
                                                                       - sagged so as to lower the vehicle more than 50
                                                                         mm (2") from one side to the other
                                                                       - shifted so as to be less than 13 mm (0.500")
                                                                         from any rotating part

          b.       shackles                                b.          loose, broken, missing, worn 3 mm (0.125") or
                                                                       more

          c.       hangers                                 c.          loose, broken, missing, worn 3 mm (0.125") or
                                                                       more at hanger bolt hole

 B.12     Shock Absorbers:

          Bounce each corner of the vehicle to check
          condition and visually inspect:

 B.13     Rear Wheel Bearings:

          Elevate axle so tires are clear of floor. Check
          wheel bearing play by pushing tire and drum
          assembly toward centre of axle housing as far as
          possible and then by pulling out as far as
          possible. Rotate wheel several revolutions.

          a.       adjustment                                a.         exceeds OEM specifications; if not given, reject if
                                                                        3.0 mm (.125 in) or more

         b.        condition                                 b.         - binding or roughness is detected while rotating
                                                                          the bearing
                                                                       - excessive noise noted during road test

                                                             NOTE: If any of the above ‘Reject’ criteria are met,

 B.14 Air Ride Suspension System

      With air in the suspension system and at normal
      operating pressure, visually and audibly inspect the
      following:
      (Note: For safety, when checking airbags, vehicle
      must be jacked up on frame)

         a.      bushings                                      a.        loose, deteriorated; sub-axle not centred; washer at
                                                                         end of stub axle contacting base of airbag

         b.        pivots                                      b.        loose, worn

         c.        lines                                       c.        cracked, crushed , leaking, disabled

         d.        air bag                                     d.        cut, bruised, air leakage is evident; vehicle body and
                                                                         chassis frame is unsupported on one or more axles or
                                                                         leans to one side; bags cracked to nylon braid.

         e.        air bag base                                e.        broken, cracked, severely corroded

         f.        radius rods                                 f.        loose, bent, broken

         g.        horizontal suspension beam                  g.        holes rusted through, excessive corrosion

         h.        pressure protection valve                   h.        air goes to suspension before air system tank
                                                                         pressure reaches 45 Kpa (65 psi)
         i.        pressure gauge                              i.        missing, inoperable, obviously incorrect reading


                                                               Out of Service Criteria

                                                                    i)     any component allows the axle to shift from its
                                                                           normal position

                                                                    ii) any air leak at an air bag

                                                                    iii) any attaching or tracking component is missing,
                                                                         loose, cracked or broken
    Operating Pressures

         With the air ride system at full pressure, note the

          inspect for:

       1) the vehicle is powered by a diesel engine;
       2) the vehicle is fitted with an aftermarket
           suspension system that has been installed in

           and QVM guidelines;

        With the assistance of a second party, make a service
        brake application and note push rod travel.

 K.12    Brake Camshafts
        With spring and service brakes released, manually
        check for movement between camshaft and
        bushings.

                                                                      (0.085 in)


 K.13    Camshaft Travel
        Back off the slack adjuster until movement is noticed
        in the brake chamber push rod. The roller will now be
        in the bottom position of the s-cam (brake s-cam
        bushings should be inspected at this time). Mark the
        slack adjuster in relation to the camshaft with chalk.
        Adjust the brakes to lock the wheel (ensure brakes
        are properly adjusted after test).
          Visually Inspect:
            a.    travel                                         a.    difference between marks is more than 120°or 1/3 of
                                                                       camshaft travel (over cammed)
