Offered on a full time basis during the week on an easy monthly payment plan or can be done on a part time
basis on Saturdays.

1. Introduction Programme – Landscape Design
Introductory programme courses can be done individually if you just want to improve your gardening
knowledge.

Programme purpose?
To equip learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to design their own gardens.

Who should attend?
These courses are suitable for the beginner or self-taught enthusiast.

How does this programme work?
The programme has been divided into 4 courses, namely:

1.1 Course 1: Introduction to Landscape Design
  Overall outcome:
To equip learners with the knowledge necessary to gain a thorough understanding of the requirements of
landscape design.
  Certification:
Lifestyle College Introduction to Landscape Design certificate.
  Course modules:
Module 1: Know your style and design goals
Module 2: Take inventory, design principles, design process
Module 3: Restyle a garden room, planting design, hard landscaping, water in the garden
Module 4: Concept plan
Module 5: Garden analysis
  Projects:
Site survey.
Design a section of your own garden.

1.2 Course 2: Introduction to Horticulture
 Overall outcome:
To equip learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to perform basic garden maintenance and care.
 Certification:

 Course modules:
Module 1: Understanding basic plant pathology
Module 2: Identifying and improving your garden soil
Module 3: Feeding plants

Course 2.1: Pruning
Take the guess work out of pruning this season and join well-known horticulturist, Elize van Staden, for a full
day workshop on pruning.

The afternoon session will include a practical workshop in a garden.

Course 2.2: Lawn management
Is your lawn in need of love and care, let the experts at Lifestyle College show you how it’s done. A one day
course covering all aspects on how to prepare and care for your lawn.

3: Preparing a new lawn

The course is aimed at any individual looking to gain a better understanding of planting and maintaining a

  Please note:
This course runs for 1 full day from 09h00 - 16h00.
Attendees are requested to bring a notepad and a pen/pencil. Everything else is provided.

1.3 Course 3: Introduction to Landscape Design Drawing
  Overall outcome:
To equip the learner with the skills and knowledge necessary to draw a landscape design. This course is for
the student who would like to progress to the more advanced design courses.

These courses are suitable for any learner who wants to learn about plants.

This course is very practical with many outings to see the mature plants listed below.

2. Advanced Programme – Landscape Design
These courses are recommended for learners who have acquired the basic skills of landscape design and
who would like to progress to performing landscape design.

Programme purpose?
To equip learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to design gardens in a variety of styles.

Who should attend?
Students are required to have obtained certification in the Introduction to Landscape Design Programme.
However if you feel that you qualify to attend this programme due to your existing knowledge and skills levels,
you may make an application to the College for recognition of prior learning.

How does this programme work?
The programme has been divided into 11 courses, namely:

2.1 Course 1: Advance Landscape Planning
 Overall outcome:
To equip learners with the knowledge necessary to gain a thorough understanding of the requirements of
garden planning.

2.7 Course 7: Design Execution

Module 1: Construction detail drawing (3 days)
Module 2: Water features (1 day)
Module 3: Concrete work and brick laying (1 day)
Module 4: Arboriculture (1 day)

 Projects:
Varies with each module.
Most of these modules are full day courses, but times may vary for each module.

2.8 Course 8: Advanced Oriental Landscape Design
 Overall outcome:
To equip learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to design an oriental garden.
 Certification:

Module 1: Introduction to the Oriental Garden
Module 2: Types of Oriental Gardens

2.9 Course 9: Advanced Horticulture
 Overall outcome:
To equip learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to propagate, perform cuttings, grafting and
budding on various plant materials.
 Certification:
Lifestyle College Advanced Horticulture certificate.
 Course modules:
Module 1: Sexual Propagation
Module 2: Vegetative Propagation – Introduction
Module 3: Vegetative Propagation – Specialised stems and bulbs
Module 4: Vegetative Propagation – Dividing and transplanting
Module 5: Vegetative Propagation – Grafting and budding
 Projects:
No written project for this course. You will, however, have your cuttings assessed to pass this course.

2.10 Course 10: Advanced Show Design & Workshop
 Overall outcome:
To equip learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to design and execute a show garden.
 Certification:
Lifestyle College Show Design certificate.
 Course modules:
Module 1: Brief
Module 2: Concept
Module 3: Hard landscaping and pattern
Module 4: Evaluation of hard landscaping and pattern
Module 5: Soft landscaping
Module 6: Evaluation of soft landscaping
Module 7: Final presentation.
 Projects:
Design and Build a Show Garden.

2.11 Course 11: Advanced Show Practical
Learners are required to do six months in-service training with a qualified landscape company and a one
month session at a retail nursery. The College can provide a list of landscape companies to the learners and
nurseries.

This should be seen as a learning experience and not necessary full time employment or a paid position. The
onus is on the student to gain the necessary work experience as stipulated in the guide.

Course duration:
Each course consists of 3 full day workshops, held over a period of 3 days from 09h00 - 15h00 and provides
hand-on experience through project work.

Design work forms an integral part of the course and a design portfolio will be compiled over the period of
study.

Guilds qualifications confirm knowledge and skill against internationally recognized standards. The certificates,
diplomas and advanced diplomas are accepted throughout the world as evidence of achievement and are
highly valued.

Fees for the City & Guilds Certificate are not included in the course costs below.

   1. Cheque made payable to Lifestyle College.
      - Please note that no postdated cheques will be accepted.
      - A penalty of R300.00 is payable if dishonoured cheques are used to make any payments.

   4. One Year Payment Plan (Full time only)
      - Please note that payments not received by the 28th of each month will result in you being unable to
      attend classes.

Part time Terms & Conditions:
    • Please note that your booking confirmation is subject to the payment of the full course fee, payable as
        soon as possible. Until your payment is received you will be placed on a provisional booking list.
    • Payments are due 3 weeks prior to the course commencing, provided there is still place available on
        the course.
    • Courses starting in January need to be fully paid before the end of November of the previous year.
    • A monthly interest of 1.5% will be charged on overdue accounts.
    • Unfortunately no refund or credit can be given should you fail to attend the course without giving
        required prior notice.
    • Lifestyle College reserves the right to cancel or change course dates on short notice.
    • Prices are subject to change without prior notice.

Part time Transfers and Cancellations:
    • In the event that you are unable to attend the course you may send a substitute in your place. You
        may transfer once at no additional charge, provided you do so in writing at least 10 working days prior
        to the course. Please advise of us your replacement in writing. Transfers inside of 10 days will be
        charged a late transfer fee of 20%.
    • You may cancel your registration in writing up to 15 working days prior to the course date, however, a
        20% cancellation fee will be levied. Cancellations inside of 15 days will be liable for the full fee.

    • A monthly interest will be charged on overdue accounts.
    • Unfortunately no refund or credit can be given should you fail to attend the course or complete the
        programme. You will still be liable for the full fees of the course.
