In addition to working on the architectural design of diverse projects from private housing to public
facilities such as the F-HOUSE, Shiroishi Municipal No.2 Elementary School and Katta Public General
Hospital, Ashihara has been actively engaged in urban redevelopment projects and development of
products in many other areas.
Taro Ashihara has received numerous awards including the JIA Prize for the Best Young Architect ’93,
1998 Annual Architectural Design Commendation of AIJ, BCS Prize 93’.
Ashihara has undertaken various social commitments by giving university lectures and serving as
members and judges of many committees including the Good Design Award judge.

KATTA PUBLIC GENERAL HOSPITAL 2002
Considerations for users’ needs played an integral role in the design of Katta
Public General Hospital, which is based on a new, innovative plan.
KUZUU DENSHO KAN 2004
KUZUU DENSHO KAN was designed as a museum to exhibit, catalog and
convey Kuzuu’s unique traditional culture as it relates to people living in the
SHIROISHI MUNICIPAL NO.2 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Shiroishi Elementary School was designed with the participation of pupils and
teachers – users of the school – and other members of the community as part of
the city’s re-development project.
KASAMA NICHIDO MUSEUM OF ART 1997
Kasama Nichido Museum of Art was designed to merge with the existing museum
and blend with its rich natural environment as an expression of the client’s
dedication to the locality.
MIZUSHIMA SALON 1996
The cultural facility, designed as a place for relaxation and enjoyment for its
citizens, was built in Mizushima, a town developed along the coastal industrial belt
that has supported Japan’s rapid economic growth.

and the natural environment out of doors is incorporated into the house in
an attempt to provide the space for a simple, quality lifestyle.
The detached house incorporates the cosmology of traditional houses in Japan.
The SH-HOUSE exemplifies the simple, modern and exquisite lifestyle.
The first house to be designed after the establishment of Taro Ashihara Architects
stands on the heights of an upscale residential area in Den-en-chofu.
The C-HOUSE offers vast possibilities to accommodate the varying needs of
occupants inside the closed interior space.
The comfortable country house VILLA-N stands in the woods of Karuizawa.
Building for Corporate Activities
Facilities that support corporate activities must function efficiently to
achieve business objectives. They also are instilled with a mission of
providing a comfortable environment for people working there while
serving the needs of the community and environment. Business facilities
are designed as an architectural work that uniquely represents the
