2. Project

      Purpose:
        To promote the interest in chemistry and provide a chance for the students to
        apply the knowledge of chemistry in some interesting investigations.

      Grouping:
        Students in 6A are divided into 4 groups and students in 6B are divided into 8
        groups with 3 to 4 students in a group.

      Topics:
        Actually students can decided what topic they want to investigate, but students
        need to make sure the investigation is not too easy or too difficult, and it is
        practical to be carried out in a secondary school laboratory. You can ask your
        teacher for practicality of the project work.

           According to our experience, the following topics are practical and up to
           standard. I want to mention again, these topics are only for your reference, you
           are highly encouraged to choose your favorite topic.

       1.       Analysis of iron tablets.
       2.       Analysis of aspirin tablets.
       3.       Percentage of nicotine in tobacco.
       4.       Analysis of Vitamin C tablets.
       5.       Analysis of commercial bleaches.
       6.       Analysis of commercial mineral water.
       7.       Determination of the percentage of copper in coins.
       8.       Analysis of bath salts.
       9.       Analysis of Vitamin C content of fruit juice.
       10.      Determination of caffeine content in tea.

3. Working schedule:

            Hand in the project proposal and laboratory manual to your teacher on or
             before 23/2/2001.
            Discuss with the teacher about the feasibility of the lab. before 2/3/2001.
            Perform the investigation in the practical lessons.
            Prepare for the presentation session.
            E-mail the powerpoint presentation to the teacher before 18/4/2001
            Presentation.
            Hand in a complete group report before 7/5/2001.
