              POSITION TITLE:                   Assistant Child Care Co-ordinator

POSITION OBJECTIVE

To provide a high quality, customer responsive child care program. In conjunction with the Co-
ordinator, ensure the maintenance and adherence to Children's Services Regulations 1998 and
Council and funding bodies, policies and guidelines.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

   In conjunction with co-ordinator ensure centre operation is customer focused, adheres to
    Children's Services Regulations 1998 and reflects a high quality standard of accreditation.
   Maintain appropriate staff and children's records.
   Provide regular reports to Centre Co-ordinator regarding Centre operations.
   Ensure all relevant records are accurately maintained - e.g. Sign-in book, Medication, illness,
    allowable absences, and accident/injury.
   Plan, implement, display and evaluate a program that is based on the children's cognitive,
    physical, social/emotional and language development and that meets individual and group
    needs.
   Organise staff rosters ensuring that appropriate regulations are met.
   Work co-operatively and effectively with other team members, demonstrate appropriate
    practices, provide guidance, support and direction to staff.
   Ensure that the centre is operating according to all centre procedures, policies and protocols.


Risk Management
Contribute to the effective protection of council in accordance with the Council’s risk
management policy and procedures.


Occupational Health and Safety
Contribute to a safe working environment by adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety
Act 2004, regulations and Council Occupational Health and Safety procedures.


Customer Service
Provide excellent customer service to all internal and external customers.


ORGANISATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to:                                          Centre Co-ordinator

Supervises:                                          All Child Care Centre staff/Occasional Care staff in
                                                     Co-ordinator's absence


ACCOUNTABILITY AND EXTENT OF AUTHORITY

The incumbent will be accountable for providing consistent and high quality child care at a level,
which achieves Accreditation targets and meeting all child care regulations and parent
expectations.

The incumbent will also be accountable for the maintenance of centre operations so that it
meets all funding body and Council policies and requirements.

JUDGEMENT AND DECISION MAKING

The incumbent will make daily decisions in consultation with the Centre Co-ordinator in ensuring
all child care staff achieve effective and high quality service delivery and that staff child ratios are
maintained.

Guidance and advice will always be available from the Centre Co-ordinator or the Manager of
Family and Children’s Services.

SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

 Demonstrated leadership or supervisory skills
 Good level computer knowledge
 Demonstrated understanding of child care funding and benefits (CCB)
 Experience in staff rostering
 An understanding and commitment to the philosophy of inclusion
 Well developed knowledge of child care and family issues and child development
 Demonstrated practical and theoretical knowledge of program planning
 An ability to be flexible in approach to the needs of the centre and its clients.
 Ability to refer families to local early years’ services such as maternal and child health, family
    support, playgroups and community health services, as required


MANAGEMENT SKILLS

The incumbent will be required to provide daily supervision and leadership for up to 10 staff
including permanent, casual and contract staff.

Must be able to manage own time and that of staff being supervised, including setting up
appropriate rosters to maintain staff / child ratios.

Organisational and administrative skills including - budget monitoring, funding administration and
basic IT skills.


INTERPERSONAL SKILLS

   Demonstrate a high level of verbal and written communication skills including an ability to
    advocate and be responsive to a wide range of people and professionals.
   A demonstrated level of interpersonal sensitivity, flexibility and ability to encourage/motivate
    staff.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

   Qualifications according to Children’s Services Regulations 1998
   Recent effective experience working in a Child Care Centre
   A solid understanding of the theories and practice of child development, inclusion,
    observationally based program planning and behaviour management
   A demonstrated high level of customer service

   Computer skills
   Successful assessment as Primary Nominee with the Department of Education and Early
    Childhood Development prior to or within the first three months of employment
   Must maintain a satisfactory police check
   Must maintain a current working with children check

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

   Qualifications according to Children’s Services Regulations 1998; minimum of a Diploma in
    Children’s Services
   A solid understanding of the theories and practice of child development, observationally
    based program planning and behaviour management
   Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills
   Excellent written and verbal communication skills
   Commitment to philosophy of Inclusion
   Substantial experience in working as a Qualified Child Care Worker
   Knowledge of child care funding and CCB process
   Experience in staff rostering
   Must maintain a satisfactory police check
   Must maintain a current working with children check
   Must meet the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s (DEECD)
    criteria for Primary Nominee status

Physical and other Requirements

   This job will involve some carrying and lifting
   Prospective employees will be required to undergo a Functional Capacity Evaluation
