EMT PROGRAM EMT Hospital Practicum: Course Outline 2008-2009 Introduction In accordance with CMA guidelines several competencies are required to be evaluated in a hospital setting. This will consist of a minimum of 96 hours. A Word of Warning Students must not practice any skills outside the “EMT scope of practice” in a hospital setting. Any student found to be doing this will be dismissed from the program and risks disciplinary action from the Alberta College of Paramedics. Goals 1. To ensure clinical experience is obtained 2. To expose the student to different clinical case presentations as might occur on an ambulance or in a hospital 3. To provide the student with the opportunity to integrate theory with practice 4. To develop an accumulation of example cases for future reference 5. To hone clinical skill, assessment, treatment, and patient management General Behavioural Objectives By the end of this course the student will be able to 1. take safety precautions 2. establish adequate patient communication 3. work collaboratively with hospital staff 4. show initiative 5. make critical interventions 6. deliver and accept constructive feedback 7. display a learning attitude 8. use appropriate language/actions with hospital staff 9. demonstrate problem solving skills and prudent judgment 10. communicate reports in properly written and verbal form 11. maintains patient dignity and confidentiality 12. abide by a schedule set by hospital staff 13. dress appropriately and maintain personal hygiene 14. functions within the scope of practice 15. perform all skills and competencies necessary to successful completion of practicum Specific Behavioural Objectives The EMT Hospital Practicum student shall complete the following: 1. Successfully complete all “Hospital” competencies listed in the online logbook as assessed by the preceptor. 2. Actively seek out and participate in learning opportunities the competency profile as opportunities present themselves in the hospital setting. 3. Successfully complete as many “Simulation” competencies as possible listed in the electronic logbook as assessed by the preceptor, and as opportunities present themselves in the hospital setting. 4. Perform all competencies under the supervision of a designated preceptor. 5. Ensure that all required paperwork, including contracts and evaluations forms, are completed and submitted to the school at the appropriate time and in the appropriate format. 6. Upon completion of the practicum, the student shall function at the level of an intermediate EMT student. Evaluation This is a pass/fail course. Students must read and be familiar with the Hospital Practicum Manual which outlines the policies, procedures and requirements of the EMT hospital practicum. Failure to read and be familiar with the manual will result in a failing grade. Failure to follow the required University policies will also result in a failing grade. Students must upload their data to the preceptor at least once per week. Failure to do this will result in a failing grade for the course. Note: It is the responsibility of the student to track any data not yet uploaded to the preceptor. Frequent and daily uploads are recommended. Loss of data in any manner may require additional practicum time for verification purposes. Students must successfully complete all required competencies as evidenced by completion and submission of competencies to the preceptor. Students must have completed a minimum of 96 hours. Furthermore, students must arrive at their practicum placement on the date and time assigned by the practicum coordinator with a copy of their criminal record check and immunization records in hand. Failure to bring authorized copies of either the criminal record check or the immunization records on the first day of practicum will result in a failing grade. Being late or absent on the first day of practicum will result in a failing grade unless an instructor is notified prior to the start time that the student will be late or absent and providing the reason provided is reasonable given the circumstances. Students must also ensure the EMT Program Practicum Contract is signed and faxed to Augustana as soon as is reasonably possible. Further to this, students may be required by their preceptors to complete minor assignments during the course of the practicum. Providing these are deemed reasonable by the Head Instructor these too must be successfully completed by the student in order to pass the course. The Head Instructor shall have final say over all preceptor given assignment marks. Students must ensure that all requirements listed in the Hospital Practicum Completion Checklist are completed, SIGNED and reflect successful completion of the requirements in order to pass the course. Resources Students and preceptors require access to the Internet in order to complete practicum reporting requirements. Paper forms are best submitted by fax machine, but if a fax machine is not available, students may mail or hand-deliver paper forms. Academic Integrity The University of Alberta is committed to the highest standards of academic integrity and honesty. Students are expected to be familiar with these standards regarding academic honesty and to uphold the policies of the University in this respect. Students are particularly urged to familiarize themselves with the provisions of the Code of Student Behaviour (online at www.ualberta.ca/secretariat/appeals.htm) and avoid any behaviour which could potentially result in suspicions of cheating, plagiarism, misrepresentation of facts and/or participation in an offence. Academic dishonesty is a serious offence and can result in suspension or expulsion from the University.
