May 8, 2009 Parents: Check those backpacks – Progress Reports went home this week!
Congratulations to…
Congratulations to the Theatre Department‟s 2009 International Thespian Society Inductees. The International Thespian Society is a honor society by which interested thespians must earn 10 points (equal to 100 hours of work in the theatre) to be eligible for induction. We are VERY proud of our new Thespians: Jamie Bourke, Julia Boyhan, Tyler Conrady, Melina Countrymen, Brandon Dalzell, Gabriela De La Zerda, Megan Ellis, Annabel Hicka, Emma Hunsicker, Alice Johnson, Victoria Mason, Savanna Shurman, Kendyl Stewart, Jackson Upperco, Brad Viola, and Nate Stiger. Orange County Utilities Commission and Water Division organized an Art Project inviting high schools to participate. Each school would form a team of five students to construct and paint rain barrels. The rain barrels had to have a screen top, a faucet attached at the bottom, and painted all around. Boone High School art students formed two teams and won two awards. The team winning Best Florida Theme is Lilly Meister, Elizabeth Schuler, Kristen Parker, Julia Ordonez, and Heather Walker. The team winning Best Overall Theme is Taylor Huff, Natalie D’Amico, Mayra Benavides, and Nicole Regan. Please join me in congratulating these art students on a job well done!
Announcements
BUS LOOP: Parents, please observe the designated student drop off/pick up areas. The bus loop is for busses and faculty parking only. We have had some close calls because of drop offs/pick ups in this area. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. SAFE SURF: To learn more about keeping your Braves safe when they surf the internet, please visit www.safeflorida.net/safesurf. This site was created by the office of our Attorney General, Bill McCollum and contains much useful information for students and for parents. The news is full of reports involving cyber-stalking, cyber-bullying, and “sexting.” Arm yourself and your student with up-to-date info about safety on the internet. An important lesson for all our students: Once something is texted, emailed, or posted, it can never be taken back! CAMPUS SECURITY: All parents and guests are asked to please sign in and get a visitor badge whenever you are on our campus for any reason. Whether going to the Attendance,
Student Services, or Discipline offices, we must ensure that only people with business on our campus are here. Having a visitor badge quickly identifies you as someone who has signed in. Thanks for your cooperation in this important safety process. Boone is a safe school and our goal is to keep it that way. We have almost 300 adults on campus including 2 SROs and 2 security guards in addition to our security camera system. We always tell our students, however, that their 3100 sets of eyes and ears are the very best security system in town. Any student who has a concern just needs to tell one adult, and school personnel will respond. Students and parents are also encouraged to use our Boone hotline (407.893.SAFE) at any time to report safety concerns anonymously. SAT PREP COURSE: If your student is interested in taking the SAT prep course to prepare for the upcoming SAT next month, registration ends this week. The course begins Tuesday, May 12, and runs through the following dates: 5/14, 5/19, 5/21, 5/26, and 5/28. The class begins at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 9:00 a.m. and meets in the media center computer lab. If your student is interested, he or she can sign up in Mrs. Patton‟s room (room 209) this week. MAGNET NEWS: The law sophomores took a field trip to the Orange County Historical Society this week. This was the venue for a mock DUI trial, conducted by a local judge, a police officer, and three local attorneys, all of whom should consider acting as a future career. (One student later asked if these people are all actors who tour around the country putting on this trial for kids!) The students were given the chance to see what a trial might look like, and there was a good discussion about the burden of proof, presumption of innocence, and what it would be like to be on trial for DUI. We discussed the dangers of driving under the influence, particularly for new drivers. The most impactful portion of the presentation was a guest speaker whose life was touched by DUI. While this summary does not properly do the event justice, rest assured that the message was delivered in a format that gave the students pause, but did not result in a "lecture" which students might be inclined to tune out. The kids were grateful for the information, for the adults who gave their time, and for the field trip. Junior G8 - Top 10 in the Nation! We created a new team at Boone based on the G8. Each year the Group of 8 (G8) consisting of the richest industrialized countries meets to set an agenda for future negotiations and treaties. The countries address major problems that the planet will face in the coming year. UNICEF sponsors a Junior G8 summit, bringing 4 students from each of the G8 nations to the conference, to run a side-by-side summit along with the adult summit. The students at the Junior G8 discuss the same issues, and meet heads of state. The G8 will be in Italy this July and UNICEF will pay for one student team from the U.S. to travel to Italy for this conference. Boone submitted a team, named Modus Operandi, and the Boone students researched and wrote about Global Warming, Poverty (specifically microloans,) and HIV/Aids. We learned this week that we did not win, but our team did place in the top 10 in the nation! Boone's G8 team was made up of Ania Bang, Megan Raitano, Taylor Thompson, and Sergio Uribe. For the past two weeks, the "Finance Squad", comprised of Academy Finance sophomores, has been competing against 42 teams from around the country in the 2009 Junior Achievement Titan National Championship; an automated simulation whereby students manage a manufacturing firm that produces hologenerators. From product design, pricing, marketing and research & development to charitable contributions and capital investment, students develop detailed action plans that take into consideration economic cycles, supply & demand forces, loan
rates and taxation. Based upon the group's performance to date, the team has advanced into the finals where they will now be competing against 23 other schools for a chance at the grand prize of $1,500. The Orlando Police Cadets closed this year with the Cadets having donated hundreds of Community Service hours to the citizens of Orlando and having received additional training at each meeting. The following Cadets have qualified to represent the Post at competition in Coral Springs this summer: Lawrence Wint, Deon Cooper, Sergio Uribe, Victoria Boatman, Nick Olmeda, Elizabeth Brown, and Kristopher Stough. A BIG thank you goes out to families who have been keeping their children home when they are sick and promptly picking them up when called. We have had no cases or suspected cases of the H1N1 Virus here at Boone. We want it to stay that way, so please continue to encourage good hand washing at home and school. Remind them your studnets to cough into their sleeve, and encourage them to get in the habit of washing their hands before they eat. The following signs and symptoms may indicate the beginning of a communicable disease. Please keep your child home when any of these signs/symptoms are noted, and seek medical attention as needed: sore throat, headache, fever (100 degrees), rash or open oozing sores, red eyes (s), itching or crusty, purulent discharge, nausea, vomiting, cough, and chills. Parents will be notified and asked to take their child home if they exhibit any of these symptoms. Please be prompt as the clinic is not able to hold these students for long periods of time. Remember to update new phone numbers by filling out a new form when numbers or addresses change.
N-O-T: This week, the N-O-T (Not on Tobacco) program had its final celebration! Five Boone Braves have finished the class and made a commitment to eliminate smoking from their lives. We are hoping to offer this program again next year and appreciate all the support given by teachers and administration.
