PETERBOROUGH REGIONAL COLLEGE JOB DESCRIPTION CAREER FRAMEWORK Technical Services JOB TITLE Multi Skilled Technician 1 LEVEL 3 REPORTING TO Site Services Manager SUMMARY OF POST To undertake general multi skilled maintenance duties for the College. The primary role is Carpentry. Secondary roles include general building repairs, painting and decorating, basic plumbing and mechanical repairs. Work may be generated in response to an unforeseen breakdown, planned preventative maintenance schedules or planned improvement work and assistance to other trade areas needs to be provided as necessary. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES • To respond to unforeseen breakdowns in a timely manner appropriate to the job priority. • To assist in planning and implementing preventative maintenance schedules. To plan daily work schedules based on the lists of maintenance tasks issued and their priority along with monthly preventative maintenance schedules and their priority. • In carrying out these duties, the multi skilled technician will determine what work is required, identify and request all materials, schedule the work with the customer and try to ensure that customer disruption is minimised. • The multi skilled technician may be asked to assist the Site Services Manager, Facilities Manager or Site Manager – Contracts in planning and implementing improvement projects, utilising their practical expertise. • The multi skilled technician on evening duty will support the Duty Principal and advise where appropriate; if the issue is outside of their expertise, their general technical knowledge will help the Duty Principal to make decisions or seek further advice. • In the event of an Emergency, the multi skilled technician is to report to Reception and take instruction from the Duty Principal. Multi skilled technicians may be asked to carry out search and verification tasks. • In the event of a Fire Alarm, the multi skilled technician to report to a Fire assembly point (ensuring that all the Assembly points are manned by Technicians or Caretakers) and take control of the Assembly point. The multi skilled technician to respond to questions from the ECO or Deputy ECO over the radio. • To be fully conversant with the procedures for resetting the fire alarm system and emergency release system for the disabled persons lift. • To review Health and Safety implications of work task, comply with all relevant Health and Safety instructions, report issues to Site Services Manager and request Permits where appropriate. Carry out risk assessment as required. CRITERIA ENTRY STAGE • Specific trade apprenticeship/qualification in Carpentry at level 2 • 3 years industry experience in the trade area COMPETENT STAGE • Risk Assessment qualification (or in-house training course) • Manual handling qualification (or in-house training course) • Pass probationary period • English, Maths and IT at level 1 • Additional general qualification eg First Aid qualification, PAT testing qualification or relevant other trade qualifications EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFIED STAGE • Level 3 qualification in Carpentry • English, Maths and IT at level 2 • 1 year’s experience within an educational environment CONTINUATION PAGE Career Framework Technical Services Job Title Multi Skilled Technician 1 PERSON SPECIFICATION • Good communication skills • Ability to carry out manual handling tasks related to job role after training and with appropriate equipment • Able to use their own initiative within guidelines • Able to work on their own, to clear instruction. • Able to work in a team when requested • Customer focussed attitude SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE (used for recruitment and assessed at interview • Specific trade apprenticeship/qualification at level 2 • 3 years industry experience in trade area • Ability to keep stores and re-order as appropriate Date approved Apr 09 Date reviewed This job description is current as at the date shown above.
