                    GRADER CUTTING EDGES – REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT

Purpose:

To establish a standard procedure for safe and responsible cutting edge changes in order to prevent
incidents, accidental injury and/or damage to equipment or property.

Description:

Changing cutting edges on grader mouldboards, dozer and snow wing

SAFETY EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

-       CSA approved safety footwear
-       CSA approved goggles or face shield
-       Hearing Protection
-       Gloves
-       Coveralls

Tools Required

-       Hammer
-       Alignment Bar
-       Minimum ½” drive ratchet and/or impact wrench/socket

Procedure:

1. Under normal circumstances cutting edges will be changed by the operator of that unit.

2.          Cutting edges will be changed when 90-100% of useable wear area is achieved. *This may
     require rotating cutting edges (end for end) during the life cycle of the blade.

3.         Cutting edges may be changed on the jobsite or at either of the Public Works Shops.

4.          Cutting edges for graders will be one of the following types (depending on conditions and
     requirements):
      S20 carbon blades
      Heat treated ice blades
      Carbide inserted blades
      Carbon wing blades
      Carbide tip scarifying blades (Sandvik)

5. When changing cutting edges, extreme care should be taken to avoid over exertion. Lifting techniques
   such as lifting one end at a time should be considered.

6. Stands or mechanical cylinder blocks should be used where applicable.

7. If assistance is required to lift cutting edges into place, it may be requested by the following means
   (either by 2-way radio, telephone, or in person):
    Contact the Area Foreman who will arrange for assistance
    Contact the Shop Coordinator or Manager
    Request assistance from a mechanic or co-worker

8. If assistance isn’t available immediately or if you are unable to contact your supervisor:
    Do not attempt the job yourself
    Perform other maintenance tasks on your unit until assistance arrives
    Have tools ready to complete the job

9. Always carry the Emergency GPS FOB whenever working outside the cab of the grader.
