Introduction

Linking campaigns, such as through article submissions and link exchanges,
are an effective method of making your website known to large groups of
people. Search engines such as Google, Yahoo! and MSN (and others) use
software programs to list and rank websites.

Each link back to your site is like a "vote" for the popularity of your site. If
you have more links, you have more votes, and the search engines tend to
take your site more seriously and visit it more often.

Social bookmarking is another effective technique that definitely needs to
be in your link strategy. Social bookmarking is done at websites that allow
you to submit your website link, some descriptive keywords (called tags),
and a short description. It doesn't have to be your own website that you
submit, either.

HINT: See the List of Resources at the end of the report for ready-made
Adsense sites you can promote.

The "social" part of social bookmarking means that you'll be sharing your
submissions with everyone! You might submit a joke page, a funny picture,
a good bargain, or pictures of your grandkids. The idea is to share web
resources with people. The search engines such as Google, Yahoo! and MSN
will eventually find the links you submit, but social bookmarking is
managed by people rather than machines!

It is entirely permissible to submit your own websites to social bookmarking
sites! If you have a product for sale, a cool list of resources, an article
section, or other area you want other people to visit, submit it!

That's why internet marketers are turning to social bookmarking as a way to
attract attention from new customers and from the search engines.

If you bought my guide "Learn Social Bookmarking," you learned how to
take your social bookmarking efforts to the next level. If you didn't, you
can get it here:

The goal of the guide you are reading now is to give you some simple ways
to measure your link building progress, regardless of the methods you use.

Difference Between Search Engines And Bookmarking Sites

Both the search engine and the social bookmarking site are places you visit
to search for information. The way those sites get that information makes
the big difference.

A search engine such as Google, Yahoo, or MSN uses a program that
essentially travels from website to website, keeping a list of every page that
it finds. The list of web pages is completely automated, and so is the
display when you search for something.

A social bookmarking site gathers links and pages by a different method --
real live people submit their pages and links to the bookmarking sites. Like
the search engine, the social bookmarking sites build a large list of sites
and links.

Unlike the search engine, the social sites' list of web pages are built by
people. Just like you sent that funny e-mail joke to your friends, you can
tell other people about a funny or interesting web page by letting a social
bookmarking site know about it.

Now that doesn't mean a search engine and a social bookmarking site can't
work together! Social sites are constantly adding new and interesting
content, which attracts search engines like flies at a picnic! The interest of
search engines is an excellent side effect that helps your sites get interest
from web searchers as well as searchers on social sites.

Optimization for your websites with this fully illustrated and free guide!

Before You Start Your Link Building Activities

In order to measure your link building progress, it is necessary to get a
snapshot of how many pages you have in the search engines before you
begin.

If you have sites with existing back links to them from articles and other
methods, that's OK too. You'll simply use the techniques below to establish
your linking level right now. Then you can compare future numbers to
those you measure today.

Measuring Your Link Building Success Io309WLmnN2EKcXGRggvgg9qq Page 6
Copyright 2007 by Doug Smith
We will also be checking the number of links to your website in the search
engines. This is important too, because links are like "votes" or
"recommendations" for your website. The more links you have, the more
importance a search engine is likely to put on your site!

The third thing we will be checking is the number of visitors to your
website. Get this data from the company that hosts your website. I prefer
to use the number of unique visitors, if your website offers this data.

The search engine page and link counts are easy to do by using some
simple commands at the major search engines. These measuring
techniques focus on Google, Yahoo and MSN, but may also work on smaller
search engines.

We'll assume the link to your website is www.example.com Whenever you
see "example.com," replace it with your own website address.

NOTE #1: The results from these search engines can vary widely. Don't
be alarmed! You might be wondering which one to believe. Well, each one
has different rules for including web pages in its index. Each search engine
visits sites at different times, and updates its index at different times.

Google's results are comparable to Google's results, so we'll compare before
and after results with Google. Then we'll compare the before and after
results for Yahoo, then do the same for MSN.

NOTE #2: The sample site used in this guide is www.example.com This is
a website set aside to be used as an example. It is not a website owned or
controlled by me. It is simply a convenient link to use to demonstrate
these results.

NOTE #3: All the examples use www.example.com To use these
techniques, replace www.example.com with your own site name. For
example, if your site is named www.mycoolsite.com, then use
www.mycoolsite.com in all the procedures shown below.

OK? Let's start!

Checking The Number Of Pages In The Search Engines

Google

Let's see how many pages you have in Google's search engine index.

1. Visit http://www.google.com

2. Type this search phrase into the form:

site:www.example.com

Remember to replace "example.com" with your own site. Notice the colon :
between "site" and "www." It is important to include it!

3. Click the "Google Search" button. Please don't click the "I'm feeling
lucky" button!

4. Check the results. You notice a page count on the right side of the
screen. In this example, it says "Results 1 - 3 of 3 from
www.example.com." That means there are 3 pages in Google for this
website.

Yahoo

Let's see how many pages you have in Yahoo's search engine index.

1. Visit http://www.yahoo.com

2. Type this search phrase into the form:

site:www.example.com

Remember to replace "example.com" with your own site. Notice the colon :

3. Click the "Web Search" button.

4. Check the results. You notice a page count on the right side of the
screen. In this example, it says "Results 1 - 50 of about 371." That
means there are 371 pages in Yahoo for this website. That's quite different
from Google's 3 pages!

MSN

Let's see how many pages you have in MSN's search engine index.

1. Visit http://www.msn.com

2. Type this search phrase into the form:

site:www.example.com

Remember to replace "example.com" with your own site. Notice the colon :
between "site" and "www." It is important to include it!

3. Click the "Search Web" button.

4. Check the results. You notice a page count on the upper part of the
screen. In this example, it says " site:www.example.com
Page 1 of 2,617 results." That means there are 2,617 pages in MSN for
this website. That's a big change from Google's 3 pages and Yahoo's 371
pages!

Summary Of Results For Pages

Here's what we have before we do any social bookmarking for the site
www.example.com

Search Engine Number of Pages Listed

Google 3
Yahoo 371
MSN 2617

See, I told you they would be different!

Now we need to check the number of links that www.example.com has in
each of the search engines.

New Link Counting Tool

Google's "link:" command has traditionally shown very few of a site's actual
incoming or inbound links (links from other sites). Google now has a much
more accurate way of determining the incoming links to your sites.

To use the new Inbound Link Tool, your site must meet these criteria:

1. You must have a free account for Google Webmaster Tools at
https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/ This is the site where you
submit your Google sitemaps. If you have an Adwords, Adsense, or Gmail
account, then you have a Webmaster Tools account.

If you need a Google account, go here:
http://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount

1. You have a Google sitemap for your website listed in Google's
Webmaster Tools.

2. You have verified your Google sitemap. Verifying your sitemap tells
Google that the site really belongs to you.

The instructions for performing Steps 1 and 2 are beyond the scope of this
guide. However, these steps are not really too difficult and I expect you
should have no trouble with them.

NOTE: I used one of my personal websites in the examples below, which is
why the links are blurry.

How To Access The Links Tool

Here are the steps to get a much more accurate count of the sites that link
to yours. This procedure assumes that you have created a Google sitemap
for your website, submitted it to Google, and verified your site.

1. Visit https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/

Measuring Your Link Building Success Io309WLmnN2EKcXGRggvgg9qq Page 12
Copyright 2007 by Doug Smith
2. Log in to your Google Webmaster Tools account.

3. If you have more than one site listed, locate the site for which you want
to get the number of incoming links.

4. Click on the link to that site.

5. Click on the "Links" tab at the top of the page.

Measuring Your Link Building Success Io309WLmnN2EKcXGRggvgg9qq Page 13
Copyright 2007 by Doug Smith
6. The top line of the table that appears has the heading "All pages (total
links)" on the left. On the right, under "External Links," is the number you
are looking for:

This site has 980 external links pointing to it in Google!

7. Note that this tool also shows the external links pointing to each of your
pages! This is excellent information to have, because it shows which parts
of your site need more links.

Measuring Your Link Building Success Io309WLmnN2EKcXGRggvgg9qq Page 14

8. If you click the "My Sites" button on the right, you will get a drop-down
list of the other sites you have listed and verified. You can choose a
different site to check links if you want to do so.

When possible, use Google's Inbound Links Tool to obtain the number of
sites that link to yours. However, you need to be consistent. Don't use the
Inbound Links Tool one time, then use the "link:" command the next. The
numbers you get won't make sense!

Comparison of Google Methods

Let's compare Google's results using the same site above that had 980 links
pointing to it. I've submitted dozens of articles about that site to hundreds
of article directories. Therefore I know that there are many links pointing to
that website.

Google Links using link: 8 (no way!)
Google Links using Inbound Links Tool 980 (much better!)
Yahoo Links (see procedure below) 5,089 (wow!)
MSN Links (see procedure below) 90 (better than 0!)

The Google results vary wildly, as do those of the other search engines.
However, I believe the 980 links result from the Inbound Links Tool much
more than I believe the 8 links from the link: command.

1. Visit http://www.yahoo.com

2. Type this search phrase into the form:

3. Click the "Web Search" button.

4. Check the results. You notice a page count on the right side of the
screen. In this example, it says " Inlinks 1 - 50 of about 65,549." That
means there are 65,549 links in Yahoo to this website.

MSN

Let's see how many links you have in MSN's search engine index.

1. Visit http://www.msn.com

2. Type this search phrase into the form:

link:www.example.com

Remember to replace "example.com" with your own site. Notice the colon :
between "link" and "www." It is important to include it!

3. Click the "Search Web" button.

4. Check the results. You notice a page count on the upper part of the
screen. In this example, it says " link:www.example.com
Page 1 of 66,678 results." That means there are 66,678 links in MSN
that point to this website.

Using These Techniques On Other Search Engines

These particular link (link:) and page number (site:) commands also work
with these search engines:

http://www.altavista.com
http://www.metacrawler.com
http://www.dogpile.com

You'll just have to try it yourself to see they work on other search engines.
However, the majority of your search engine traffic is likely coming from
Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

If you find a search engine that you're interested in, and these techniques
don't work, here is a strategy. On the main page of that search engine,
look for an "Advanced Search" link, or something similar. That will usually
tell you how to get page and link counts from that specific search engine.

HINT: See the List of Resources at the end of the report for a fully featured
yet cost effective autoresponder service.

Summary Of Results For Links

Here's what we have before we do any social bookmarking for the site
www.example.com

Search Engine Number of Links Listed

Google 3 ,340
Yahoo 65,549
MSN 66,678

We're almost done -- really! It takes much longer to explain than it does to
do.

Summary Of "Before" Search Engine Results

Here are the results of the "before" tests for both pages and links:

Search Engine Pages Links

Google 3 3340
Yahoo 371 65,549
MSN 2,617 66,678

Measure The Number Of Visitors To Your Site

The final piece of information you need to assess your link building results
is a measure of the site visitors you receive. Most web hosts offer this
information for free. You usually have to login to the control panel of your
website. Use the number of unique visitors if this number is available. Ask
your web hosting company how to find this information, because it is a
different procedure for each host.

Visitors are usually given as average visitors per day or visitors per month.
I prefer visitors per month. Whichever one you use, be consistent and use
that one all the time.

Obtain the number of visitors to your site before you start building links. If
you have already started, then go ahead and measure your links, so you
know how many you have right now.

HINT: See the List of Resources at the end of the report the best web host
for Internet Marketers.

Start Your Link Building!

Now that you have the "before" data, begin your link building activities.

Measure the numbers of pages and links every two weeks. Use the
procedures described above. Record your "after" data with your "before"
data. This will give you an idea of how your sites are growing and how
effective the linking strategies are.

Measuring Your Link Building Success Io309WLmnN2EKcXGRggvgg9qq Page 19
Copyright 2007 by Doug Smith
Get the number of unique visitors to your website on the same day that you
find the page and link counts. If your web host only has visitor data for
each month, you'll have to record it every 4 weeks instead of every 2
weeks.

Write everything down!

Be Patient - It Takes Time

It may take several weeks for your link building efforts to show results.
There are all kinds of reasons for this. Search engines follow their own
schedules. The places that you are linking about might not be popular at
this time of year. For example, if you have links on a website about
swimwear, trading links about bathing suits in the middle of winter might
not increase your traffic.

Keep right on building links for your swimsuit site, though. When the hot
season comes around, you will have plenty of links on the search engines so
that people can find you! Your swimwear site will be well-established and
ready to profit.

Analyzing The Data

There's not really much to analyze. All you do is compare your previous
readings to your newest readings. You should see a steady increase over
time.

Your data might look like this:

     Begin Pages Links Visitors
  1-Jan-2007

Google 3 3340 --

Yahoo 371 65549 --

MSN 2617 66678 --

Visitors/month -- -- 50

Hopefully you will have small to moderate increases in each category. (OK,
we hope they will be HUGE increases!).

Decreases will happen, so don't be alarmed. Your number of pages, links,
and page rank may fluctuate during certain times of the year. These are
the times during which search engines, especially Google, are updating and
adjusting their search engine listings. This is called the "Google Dance" and
happens about four times each year.

Make a spreadsheet to record your numbers over time, and to automatically
the changes.

Other Ways To Use These Techniques

You can use these page, link, and visitor numbers to estimate the results of
several marketing activities besides social bookmarking. You can use them
to estimate the traffic gained from submitting articles to article directories.
They can help verify the effectiveness of link exchanges with other
websites.

Warning

If you are submitting social bookmarks, writing and publishing articles, and
exchanging links all at the same time, you won't know which activities
caused which traffic and link increases!

HINT: See the List of Resources at the end of the report to discover where
to obtain hundreds of fresh private label rights (PLR) rights articles each
month for free, and how to distribute them to thousands inexpensively.

It would take some sophisticated techniques and maybe even special
software to separate and quantify the effects of different marketing
activities occurring at once. That's beyond the scope of this report.

However, if you are only doing one method of promotion at a time, then
these techniques will give you a rough estimate of the success of your
promotion. For example, if you decide to begin social bookmarking, but you
are not submitting articles or exchanging links, these techniques will give
you a rough approximation of the success of your bookmarking strategies.
It will not be exact!

Check For Traffic From The Bookmarking Sites

Check your website logs for traffic from the social bookmarking sites. Your
logs contain records of each visitor to your site. Ask your website host how
to access your logs, because the procedure is different for every host.

Social bookmarking sites have unusual names like Del.icio.us, Furl and
Simpy, among many others. If your website logs show visitors from
Furl.net or Simpy.com, you know that people are finding your site!

How To Spy On Your Competitors!

Did you notice how much page and link data I obtained from a website
that I don't even own? You can use the same techniques to keep track of
your competitors. They won't even know that you are doing it!

One of the things you can do to beat your competitors is to find which sites
link to them. Then visit those sites, and see if you can add your own links
to those sites. Perhaps your competitor has discovered a site that is
providing huge amounts of traffic through the link the competitor
exchanged with that site. You could also exchange links with that site, and
possibly divert some of the competitor's traffic!

Your competitor may have also found sites with high page rank with which
to trade links. Once again, you can trade links with the same site, and get
the same benefit.

Another technique is to determine how many pages your competitor has in
the search engines. If they have lots more than you do, perhaps you need
to add more search engine optimized content.

Look at the pages of your competitor. What is their purpose? Are they
optimized for one keyword in their niche, with a link to their main product
page? Do they have relevant content with an opt-in form? Do these pages
link to affiliate sites?

By analyzing what your competitors are doing online, you can either employ
me the same strategies yourself, or perhaps think of more effective ones.
You might also get some great internet marketing tips along the way.

Remember: you're competitors won't know that you are doing this research
on their sites. Think about this, though: you won't know if your
competitors are doing the same research on your sites!

Finally, don't get so caught up in spying on other sites that you neglect your
own! Take a peek at the competition every month or two. Meanwhile, keep
adding content and building links for your own sites.

Conclusion

Use these techniques and numbers to measure your overall link building
activities. It is difficult to determine the effect caused by each separate
activity. Therefore these techniques give you an overall picture of your
website's presence on the web. As long as the numbers keep going up,
keep doing what you are doing!
