OSTI/Google Partnership
§ About half of all Web searches in the world are performed with Google, which has been translated into 86 languages (Steven Levy, Newsweek, 12/02). OSTI has developed a unique opportunity to work directly with Google to make DOE information more visible to the global internet user community. As a result of this technical collaboration, worldwide visibility for Information Bridge documents will be a reality in May.
§
§
OSTI/Google Partnership (Continued)
§ Google expressed interest in working with other Federal Agencies to increase Google coverage of obscure federal collections as well as Gray literature. OSTI introduced Google to the Government Printing Office staff in April to focus on making Congressional/Federal documents more visible. OSTI is now collaborating with Google to work with other Federal Agencies. A meeting is tentatively planned with CENDI in June.

Single Page Access Feature for the DOE Information Bridge
§ § § § Search within a report without downloading the entire file View individual pages Available with internal and external PDF documents Beneficial to dial-up users with slow connections
Author Notification
§ OSTI sends a courtesy message to Authors when their documents are posted on the Information Bridge. § If Author emails are provided in the Elink record, or If the Author email can be identified via the site directory.
To date, almost 10,000 notifications have been sent with positive author response.
Search Features for the PrePRINT Network
§ § § § The PrePRINT Network now uses a newly designed search feature for web sites. Allows users to search over 120,000 PDF documents residing on about 10,000 researcher web pages. Search options include: subject category, document title, top of document, or full text. Descriptions of retrieved eprints are returned along with options to view and download selected documents directly from the home page of the providing researcher.
Search Features (Continued)
§ In addition to making the E-print itself available, this feature now enables the user to readily access homepages of the providing researcher. In addition, users can still use the Search Selected Databases feature to do a simultaneous distributed search of 28 selected preprint databases.
§
Next Steps for PrePRINT Network
§ § § § § All documents retrieved are currently in PDF format Plan to add postscript, ghostscript, and TeX documents Create better growth and maintenance tools Repositioning the product: E-print Network: Research Communications for Scientists and Engineers Promotional activities
