Special thanks to all of the staff and students who helped make this event a success. It was especially great to have our new cheerleading squad give a cheer and to see the enthusiasm of our student tour guides. Parents of grade nine through twelve students should have received a notice earlier this week about an Advanced Placement meeting on Monday, May 18th at 2:45. At the meeting, we will provide information on high school graduation requirements, course choices for next academic year, details about the Advanced Placement Program and acceptance of AP coursework in universities and colleges. We hope you will be able to attend and receive this important information. Students are welcome, too. Don‟t forget the PTO Annual General Meeting will take place on May 20th at 7:00 PM. We will be electing nominees for parent members of the Board of Directors and officers for the PTO. A list of the candidates is published in this newsletter along with proposed amendments to the PTO By-Laws (please refer to the separate attachment). We expect these new features will be in place for the upcoming tournament. Please remember that the PTO is hosting a BBQ on PTO AGM Saturday, May 23rd, with a special invitation to leaving families to take advantage of this May 20 @ 7:00pm last opportunity to cheer for our sports’ teams. Goooo Caimans! Our school counselors and I will host a Parent Coffee Morning on Third Culture Kids on Wednesday, June 3rd at 7:30 AM. We will present information about Third Culture Kids and will talk about ways internationally mobile families can ease their transition as they move from one culture to another (even if the family is going back ―home‖). We will also have a time when parents can share some of their own experiences adapting to new cultures. This discussion will be relevant to all internationally mobile families and of special interest to those who are moving at the end of this school year. Enjoy the weekend. I have served in this capacity since September 2007. In this coming year there will be a significant number of changes of the Board membership due to transfers taking place. Being re-elected to the Board will help to ensure the continuity of the direction the Board is taking. In 2008 the Board was tasked with finding a replacement for the then Director. I served on the committee making the selection for the current Director. I have always been interested in the development of the education of students and ensuring that students of all abilities are able to attain their potential. This interest encourages me to seek re-election to the Board in order to help guide the direction that the school follows in the challenging years ahead. My interest in education follows through in the supplementary activities that I participate: I teach a class in Engineering to the Petroleum M.Sc. students at University of Trinidad & Tobago. I serve on the ―Petroleum Engineering Focus Group‖ of UTT I currently also serve on the Quality of Education Committee My current position as Reservoir Engineering Instructor, means that I am teaching young engineers throughout the world. I teach courses in Far East, Middle East, Latin and Central America and the USA. I see young enthusiastic graduates on a daily basis – and consider that I understand what young people are looking for today. In Trinidad & Tobago my time is spent either preparing or writing courses. My schedule, therefore, is reasonably flexible and with planning, I can dedicate the time required to properly perform the task of Parent Director. Election Statement: Mike D. Jackson As a father of 3 children presently attending the ISPS Middle and High School. I feel that I satisfy the major credential for serving as a Parent Director on the ISPS Board - a commitment that we all have, to support the education of our children both at home and in their academic surroundings. To this end I have spent one year acting as Alternate Parent Director and two years serving on the Quality of Education committee of ISPS which supports the Board and School in the provision of data and information to aid in critical decision making. This work with the Board and on the Q of E committee has allowed me to gain an insight into the workings of the school which I hope would continue to be of value to the school and its administration going forward. I also feel that my many years of experience as a Manager and as an expatriate with a family working in many international locations will be of considerable benefit to the Board allowing me to offer a balanced opinion to the challenges that the school faces in its journey ahead. I have been reinforcing the importance of hand washing and other preventative measures with students. I am taking this opportunity to ask you to encourage the students to wash hands frequently at home. Elementary students have been working on different assignments about being safe in the sun. When young Leon Tolchinsky (played by ISPS sophomore Ross Tanner) walks into the 1890s Russian village of Kulyenchikov to answer a help-wanted advertisement, he is taken aback. Because of an ancient curse, everyone in the village is an idiot. Tolchinsky then learns that he will have to break the curse, or become an idiot, too. In Neil Simon's comedy "Fools," being presented by the ISPS Theatre Co., Dr. Zubritsky (Salome Boccara) and his wife Lenya (Robin Jones-Kerr) have sent for Tolchinsky so he can educate their daughter, Sophia (Tara Armour). At first Tolchinsky balks, but then realizes saving Sophia can save the whole village including himself. In the comic fable, Tolchinsky learns he must get a Zubritsky to marry a Yousekevitch. The problem is, there is no love, according to Yenchna, the butcher (Amanda Wilkins) because a fool cannot know the meaning of love. If Tolchinsky doesn't succeed in his mission within 24 hours, he, too, will become a fool, trapped in Kulyenchikov forever. Other cast members include Emma Low as Snetsky, the shepherd; Latricia Davidson as the magistrate; David Pickering as Mishkin, the mail carrier, and Eddie Mahabir as Count Gregor Yousekevitch. If you think the character names sound wild, just imagine experiencing a fire, an adoption, a divorce, a wedding and a death in the family all in one night!
