Jon Bowman, Board President Jon Bowman is a founding member of our Board and has been involved with the Haas Foundation since its inception. Jon is married to Ann and they have two grown children. Jon has been involved in both the marine and aviation industries throughout his career. Jon was Chair of the Board at Pacific Medical Center, President of the Council on Crime and Delinquency for the State of Washington and served as one of the State Hospital Regulatory Commissioners. Under Jon’s leadership, the Haas Foundation is creating a new approach to serving more schools and more students. Either Jon or one of his colleagues on the Board will be attending the planned statewide meetings. Please take some time at these meetings to share a Haas Story with Jon or other Board members.
New Program Requirement: Attend a One-Hour Meeting Near You
For schools to be eligible for funding in 2005–06, an administrator or representative from each school must attend one of the planned meetings listed in the schedule found in the Executive Director’s Corner section of this newsletter. We look forward to meeting each of you.
Frank Hanawalt Honored at Garfield High School
Frank Hanawalt, retired executive director of the Haas Foundation and principal of Garfield and Franklin High Schools in Seattle, was honored in a special recognition ceremony on April 7, 2005, at Garfield High School. In his introduction, Seattle Public Schools Superintendent Raj Manhas described Mr. Hanawalt as proof that “One individual can make a difference.” Mr. Hanawalt received a standing ovation from over 1,200 Garfield students, district and city dignitaries and colleagues past and present. Jon Bowman, Haas Foundation Board President, presented Mr. Hanawalt with a plaque honoring his service to students, which will be kept at the high school. Karel Cipra, Garfield Associated Student Body President, presented him with Garfield High School memorabilia and flowers. Mr. Hanawalt, thank you for your years of service to the youth of our community and to the Saul and Dayee G. Haas Foundation.

Sue Russell, School Fund Manager Sue Russell joined the Haas Foundation in 1988, after completing her B.A. degree at Seattle Pacific University. Sue is devoted to the mission of the Foundation, and has worked over the years to simplify grant management procedures for all schools. Sue has made friends all over the world by opening her home to international students pursuing a college degree in the United States. Exploring the Cascade Mountains has become one of her favorite activities, after a student from Romania introduced her to hiking ten years ago.

Big Impacts with Small Gifts—Haas Foundation Stories
The Haas Foundation staff is keenly aware that our grants would not be effective without the caring attention that you give to students at your schools. Thank you for noticing what children need. Here is a story from one of you: Char and Veronica are 16-year-old twins. Their dad deserted them; their mom is a heroin addict who lives in a shelter. A young couple, who knew of their situation, took them in. The foster father has a laborer job; the mother stays home with their baby. Their foster parents met with school officials and asked to be kept abreast of what home work the girls have each night, and their overall progress in school. “We have gotten them at a cross roads in their life,” the father said. “We’ve got to make sure we do everything possible to see that they succeed.” As he spoke, his young wife sat across the table, their baby on her lap, nodding her head in agreement. Most 26-year-old couples are out clubbing, not struggling to raise someone else’s children. The school was able to use some of their Haas School Fund money to buy the girls warm clothes for winter—clothes that the young foster couple could not afford. During the next year, we are going to pay more attention to your stories. We will collect these to share with you, with our donors, and with our Board. Do you have a great story about the impact that a Haas gift made on a student’s life? If so, please include it in your final report. We are asking for one story from each school.
Executive Director’s Corner
As the new Executive Director for the Saul and Dayee G. Haas Foundation, I have been surprised at what this wonderful foundation accomplishes yearly. Here are a couple of fun facts from the 2003–04 school year: • We funded 813 secondary schools in the state of Washington; • We supported over 15,602 students; and • We provided 101 schools with matching grants, totaling $32,707. Also in 03–04, the Board of Directors made two very difficult but important decisions to ensure the long-term fiscal health of the organization. Due to declining investment returns, the Board decided to cut funding to schools by 10% and freeze the addition of new schools to the program for 2004-2005. In order to be able to increase funding in the future, the Foundation is reinventing itself, focusing on fundraising, marketing (visibility) and controlling expenses. As part of our plan to improve efficiency and funding for the future, we are traveling around the state to meet with you. For schools to be eligible for funding in 2005-06, an administrator or representative from each school must attend one of the meetings listed in the schedule below. A few districts manage their funding through a district office. To receive funding for your school a representative from your school (not just your district) must be present. Why is this necessary? We are working with 813 schools. It is imperative that we get to know you better, and that your help is enlisted in supporting the Foundation’s efforts. Together, we can make a difference in the life of a child. We are looking forward to meeting each of you personally, Bonnie
Staff and Volunteer Corner
