Sustain Foundation Internship objectives:

The eight week internship opportunity during the summer of 2008 will further the mission of Sustain
Foundation through research, education, program development and monitoring in Sakina, Tanzania.

There are three main objectives of the internship :

    -   Develop and disseminate business skill modules to community members
    -   Monitor and evaluate the first year of Sustain Foundation’s Secondary School Scholars program.
    -   Conduct a health study in Sakina, Tanzania which will inform the design of the Sakina
        Community Health program to be in the beginning stages of implementation by the end of the
        internship.

Sustain Foundation expects the intense work in the community to strengthen the supportive fabric
within Sakina as well such that all programs will continue and grow after the internship ends.

Overall Itinerary

8 weeks: June 15th –August 15th

Week 1:

    -   Day 1: Pick up at KLM airport, meet homestay family, “Welcome” dinner
    -   Day 2: Orientation in Sakina in the morning, free afternoon in the village
    -   Day 3: Orientation in Arusha including visiting market, downtown and main city sites
    -   Day 4: Orientation and review of internship objectives with coordinators
    -   Day 5: Cultural and language orientation including role in the homestay family helping with
        traditional dinner, learning to wash clothes etc.
    -   Day 6: Visit Compassion Orphanage, meet director and talk possibility for teaching, sit in on a
        class and join children for lunch
    -   Day 7: Free day

Week 2:

    -   Days 1, 3, 5 (M,W,F) : Finalize business module lesson plans in the morning and teach 1-2 hour
        module in the afternoon with coordinators
           o Spend late afternoon and evening exploring the logistics of the health study so ready to
                conduct in starting in Week 4 or 5.
    -   Day 2: Site visit to Burka Secondary School where Sakina Scholars attend
           o During first week try to set up interviews with teachers and administrators for that day
    -   Day 4: Follow-up on any interviews, create database for information about Sakina Scholars
        program and enter data while also teaching the coordinators
    -   Day 6: Teach or volunteer at Compassion (Optional)
    -   Day 7: Free day

Week 3:
  - Days 1, 3, 4 (M,W,TH) : Finalize business module lesson plans in the morning and teach 1-2 hour
       module in the afternoon with coordinators
          o Try to set up a couple of dinners to meet people in the community to network, begin to
               develop friendships
  - Day 2: Plan for Sakina Scholars weekend with coordinators and have small event to meet the
       Scholars and their families
  - Day 5 and 6: Sakina Scholar Retreat
          o Sakina Scholars travel with Anneliese and coordinators to Lake Manyara National Park
               with tour guide
          o Arrive and take tour of the park in the afternoon of Day 5 followed by dinner and short
               individual interview with half of the Scholars
          o Continue tour in the morning of Day 6 followed by lunch and remaining interviews
          o Return to Sakina
  - Day 7: Free day

Week 4:

   -   Day 1, 3, 5: Finalize business module lesson plans in the morning and teach 1-2 hour module in
       the afternoon with coordinators.
           o If other community members interested in business modules or starting a small business
               consider advising or including them.
   -   Day 2: Create documents for Sakina Scholars program including eligibility criteria and application
       and progress report. Hold community discussion dinner about program
   -   Day 4: Write “Sakina Scholar Program Report”
   -   Day 6 and 7: Teach or Volunteer at Compassion and/or attend religious service with family
       (Optional)

Week 5:

   -   Day 1: Spend day arranging the health study. Make a plan for conducting household interviews
       and focus groups and arrange details such as location and time. Get sufficient questionnaire
       copies.
   -   Day 2-5: Begin health study! Hold 1 focus group each day with pre-arranged small stakeholder
       groups for 1-2 hours.
           o Conduct household interview/survey questionnaire at home in Sakina. Goal to interview
               10 adults or more per day but work no more than 8 hours including focus group.
           o Coordinators will translate health study
   -   Day 6 and 7 and Day 1 of Week 6: Free long weekend to visit Mount Meru or Moshi if interested

Week 6 AND Week 7:

   -   Day 1: Continue health study. Spend first morning evaluating how the first week of the study
       went. During afternoon making any needed changes and make any further arrangements to
       ensure interviews and focus groups are prepared for.
          o If possible, visit local health providers and/or clinic and establish contact, possibly set up
               interviews or focus group to be conducted during week 6 and 7
   -   Day 2-5: Hold 1 focus group each day with pre-arranged small stakeholder groups for 1-2 hours.
          o Conduct household interview/survey questionnaire at home in Sakina. Goal to interview
               10 adults or more per day but work no more than 8 hours including focus group.
          o Coordinators will translate health study
   -   Day 6: Teach or Volunteer at Compassion (Optional)
   -   Day 7: Free Day

Week 8:

   -   Day 1: Data entry and analysis with coordinators
   -   Day 2: Discuss study with coordinators as well as possible health initiatives and decide what
       would be most feasible and effective for community based on the study
   -   Day 3: Prepare documents summarizing (broadly) study findings and writing presentation for the
       Sakina Health Celebration. Plan the celebration day event.
   -   Day 4-5: Work with coordinators to make step by step plan for the health initiatives once the
       intern leaves. Help find other community members who will be helping with the health
       initiatives, do any additional training on developing/implementing/monitoring/adapting the
       health initiatives.
   -   Day 6: Sakina Health Celebration: A day of health in Sakina!
            o Start the day with a morning walk/run around the village.
            o Consider having a speaker from the community
            o Mid morning presentation about the health study findings
            o Health lunch for the community
            o Booths set up for health education, sign-up to work on projects
            o Afternoon discussion of health initiatives with community
            o Final event celebrating finishing health study and marking the beginning of the Sakina
                Health Program.
   -   Day 7: Wrap up internship and head home!
