I would like to take this opportunity to publicly recognize the dedicated efforts of the
A Note entire District 1 Literacy Team. Although recent budget cuts will send team
from members off to different work locations next year, everyone continues to maintain
Annette. . . their high level of commitment and effort each day to District 1 coaches, teachers and
students. It is truly a rewarding experience to be part of such a powerful, effective
Thanks to Helen who has been my right hand this past year. Her sound
judgment, organization, and insightful observations have been crucial to so much of
the success of our team. Her role has been so significant in supporting new
coaches, working with coaches in her cadre, leading Lesson Studies, sharing the responsibilities of
performance evaluation, organizing and leading team meetings and always pitching in to assist where
needed. I can’t help but think that we wouldn’t have had all the technology glitches if she were at all the
meetings this year.
Thanks to Aviva, Cecilia, Gayle, Marci, Jodi (and Josie) who go above and beyond on a daily
basis to share their expertise and enthusiasm. These wonderful ladies see every new problem as an
opportunity to learn and grow as a professional and have a wonderful way of making things happen. The
depth and breadth of their knowledge can be seen in staff development presentations which are carefully
designed to meet the specific and varied needs of teachers, principals and coaches. The one-to-one
coaching support that they have been able to provide to all coaches over the last two years has been
Thanks to Rosa for expertly and patiently answering a hundred questions a day, for organizing
Content Focused Coaching, monitoring assessment data and supporting our “coachless” schools. Rosa
is a wiz at organization. She organizes our meetings, our textbook and assessment materials, our office,
our shed -- just mention something once to her, and it is taken care of in the most organized and efficient
Thanks to Monica for always anticipating our needs and for her creative and advanced computer
skills. She works hard to keep us all organized (and on time) and graciously rushes around to get the
countless last minute requests completed in time for our meetings and presentations. She will be missed
as she moves on to accept new challenges at Canoga Park Senior High School.
And, of course, thanks to all of you coaches, without whom there would be no literacy team.
Thank you for accepting the daily challenges you endlessly face, and for persevering in supporting your
teachers through thick and thin in their instructional efforts. And a special thanks to our Social
Committee, Arlene Cowen, Leslee Hazan, Carol Arenson, Fern Capeloto, Terri Kuhlmann, Debbie
Sheiner, and Marie Reilly for planning our celebrations and acknowledging our personal needs.
Have a wonderful summer!
Last assigned day for B Basis is Friday, June 27, 2008. Literacy Coordinator
Congratulations to our new coaches on completing
their first year in a job both challenging and rewarding!
This has been a year of working hard in building
relationships, getting deeper into content, and learning
the ins and outs of being a coach. The New Coach
Academy meetings were spent in deep and honest
discussions, delving into content and growing on many
different levels. We all agree that this year has been
an exciting year of growth. We want to applaud our
new coaches for a job well done and continued
opportunities to practice their new learning!
