Job Posting & Description: BIOLOGIST‐COASTAL PLANNER for the Haida Fisheries Program (Council of the Haida Nation) Location: Old Masset, Haida Gwaii The Council of the Haida Nation (Haida Fisheries Program) is seeking a biologist with marine planning experience to assist with marine planning based at our office in Massett, BC. This is a full time contract position. Some travel and weekend work will be required. Requirements for the position include: • Bachelors degree in biology or related discipline with a minimum of five years of relevant experience • Excellent organizational and communication skills including ability to explain complex information to diverse audiences • Knowledge about Haida Gwaii marine issues • Experience working with First Nations and knowledge of Haida culture • Excellent computer skills • Familiarity with GIS and its applications would be an asset. Ongoing responsibilities include: • Working closely with the Haida Marine Work Group, other First Nations representatives, government agencies, stakeholders and other interest groups to develop an ecosystem‐based integrated marine use plan for Haida Gwaii; • Coordinating logistics for monthly Haida Marine Work Group meetings, including meeting organization, note‐taking and follow‐up; • Working with Central and North Coast First Nations Area Technical Teams to ensure consistency and coordination in marine use planning and related projects in the PNCIMA (eg, biological data collection, defining ecosystem‐based management, spatial analysis approaches); • Working with DFO and other federal and provincial agency staff on biological and ecological initiatives related to Haida Gwaii and PNCIMA marine use planning; • Taking a lead role in compiling, arranging, analyzing and interpreting biological, fisheries and other data relevant to marine use planning; • Preparing and/or presenting research studies, maps, charts and report recommendations regarding marine uses, zoning options, monitoring, and other related items and assist in the preparation of a marine use plan; • Providing organizational assistance to the Haida Marine Traditional Knowledge Study as necessary; • Preparing and producing communication and outreach materials; • Representing Haida Nation interests in meetings relevant to the Haida Gwaii marine use planning process; and • Other duties as deemed necessary.
