Waddell, Superintendent www.birdville.k12.tx.us May 4, 2009 THIS WEEK IN BISD • Birdville High School’s Vocal Edition will present VOCALEASE 2009: DISNEY DAZZLE! at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 3 and 7:30 p.m. on Monday, May 4 in the Henry Schraub Theater at Birdville High School. They will present a show full of tunes from the wonderful world of Disney. Tickets can be purchased at the door or by calling 817.547.8334. • BISD will honor the district’s 32 campus teachers of the year at a Golden Gala on Thursday, May 7. The district’s teachers of the year will be announced at that time. For event information, call 817.547.5799. • Binion Elementary’s career day is Friday, May 8. For information, call 817.547.1800. • Holiday Heights Elementary’s art day begins at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, May 8. • North Oaks Middle School is hosting a 5K Fun Run and One Mile Walk/Run as a campus fundraiser on Saturday, May 9. The mile begins at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K at 9 a.m. Everyone is invited to participate. The cost is $7 for students, $10 for adults and $12 for late registration. PHOTO OPPORTUNITY • BISD’s Title I Parent Connection Center is hosting the 5 de Mayo Festival from 3-7 p.m. on Saturday, May 9 at Haltom Middle School. Mullendore’s talent show begins at 7 p.m. on May 12. • Holiday Heights Elementary’s pre-kindergarten and kindergarten will have Field Day from 8:45-10:45 a.m. on May 14. Page 4 • Haltom High School junior, Patrick Chester, has been named a High School Aerospace Scholar and will be attending a workshop at the Johnson Space Center this summer as a guest of NASA. There are only 350 students from across the country chosen for this honor. Teachers Sandra Whitworth and Andrew Bendersky recommended him. • Birdville High School recently took 22 students to the Academic Regional Meet in San Angelo. Winners were: computer science team placed fourth, and Andy Hampton placed fifth and Brian Sain placed 11th as individuals; current events team placed fifth and Rachel Stonecipher placed 11th individually; spelling team placed fifth, and Amanda Roberts placed seventh and Brandon LePla placed 13th as individuals; literary criticism team placed fourth, and Miranda Cunningham placed eighth, Rachel Stonecipher placed 10th, and Kayla Freeman placed 14th as individuals; and Lananh Tran placed first and Dario Scalco placed second in computer applications. • Did you know that you can order DVD copies of events recorded by BISD’s Media Technology program? New and returning volunteers can enter their application online at https://www.birdville.k12.tx.us/cf/volunteer/index.cfm. • BISD started an employee recognition program called “A Touch of Class.” This program is an opportunity for students, staff, parents and community members to recognize employees for the extra-ordinary things they do for children and the district. For information, or to make a nomination, visit the district’s Web site at www.birdville.k12.tx.us. • Birdville ISD and JPS have joined together to provide two school based clinics in the district. One is in Haltom City at 2807 Layton Ave. in Haltom City, and the other is on the south side of the Academy at C.F. Thomas at 8200 O’Brian Way in North Richland Hills. The clinic treats students in BISD and their sibling’s ages newborn to 18-years-old for a $5 office charge. Services include: well child visits, sports physicals, acute care, chronic illnesses (asthma, diabetes), immunizations, and much more. The clinic does not have X-ray capabilities or dental services.
