Verbal Models to Algebra

Today’s Objective To be able to use algebra to solve real-life problems. Problem solving strategies 1.) Find the nearest square root of 625 without using the Square Root function. Pick a # and multiply it by itself, then decide if the # is too high or too low, and repeat. Problem solving strategies 2.) Find out how many times 3 will go into 51 without dividing. Subtract 3 from 51 repeatedly until you get down to a # smaller than 3. Then count the # of times you subtracted. Problem solving strategies 3.) Find the sum of the numbers from 1 to 100 without the calculator. Notice that there are pairs of #’s that add to 100. 0 & 100, 1 & 99, 2 & 98, etc.. Count them and multiply and don’t forget about 50. Problem solving strategies 3a.) Find the sum of the numbers from 1 to 1000. Same procedure as for 100, 0 & 1000, 1 & 999, etc… What do you notice about the two answers? Problem solving strategies 4.)
