Project Description

IIWC-MTV1001/Abu Hurairah Orphan House/Salatiga Central Java/Kids, Edu/Any date except Aug-
Sep/18+/2 vols
Abu Hurairah orphanage is one of moslem orphanages located in Salatiga (2 hours by bus from
Semarang city center) with 65 children living in this orphanage. This place provides education for
children as well as a place to stay. Most of the children are orphan, but some others are coming from a
very poor family that can not support for their education.
The needs that we identified from this project are: capacity building for the children to increase their
self confident, inter cultural learning, additional English and Japanese classes, IT and how to use
computer and skill development for the children.
Project: Organized together with the Moslem orphanage of Abu Hurairoh, the volunteers will organize
additional English lesson for the children in the afternoon and evening (the children live separately
between girl and boy and mainly the volunteers will work with the boys) and in the weekend or holiday,
the volunteers can also organize additional fun activity for capacity building and self confident raising.
There is a possibility to organize IT and computer free classes with the children, but up to know, no
volunteers has done it yet.
Work: Organizing additional English lesson for the children in the afternoon, helping the orphanage
with the skill development or the children such as computer basic skill, capacity building of the children
by organizing out bound activities, sport competition, music class, giving and assisting the staff taking
care of the children with their daily life and possible visits to some schools around the orphanage
where the children are going to. Please note that the children activities are very changeable for
example it is quite often that the children get an invitation for charity event just several hours before
your class, so please be prepared to be very flexible as well as for any immediate changing of your
schedule and activities.
Accommodation: in the orphan house together with the children. The volunteers will have their own
room with a Indonesian styled bathroom attached, simple matters and closet, shared kitchen or unless
in the boarding house close to the orphanage.
Location: Abu Hurairoh, Salatiga, Central Java Indonesia. The orphanage is located very close to the
main road and city center which is very easy for public facilities. Internet cafe, university, hospital,

Al-Azhari is a small Moslem's orphanage in outskirt of Semarang city with very simple basic facilities of
living standard. The orphanage is little bit remote, no public transportation will be available to reach
this place after 6.p.m, but the children are very motivated to learn new things and get in touch with the
foreign volunteer. There are about 35 children living there with a very simple condition.
Al Azhari is quite challenging project for the international volunteers because of the characteristic and
nature of the project itself. This orphanage has basic Moslem's education system combine with the
formal Indonesian system combine with low education and poverty of its inhabitant. Do not be
surprised if the children will request you for candies, small presents or even money because of the
poverty that their family and them have to face.
The main role of the volunteer is to make sure that 3 month package of English lesson material can be
delivered to the children. English is preferable because it is one of the most difficult subjects at
school. Other works that should be done by the volunteers are capacity building to increase self
confident of the children, increasing awareness of personal health and hygiene, and increasing the
awareness of the children for the environment like garbage disposal.

IIWC-MTV1003/Batu Slump Area Project/Batu Village Demak Regency/Kid, Edu/Any date except
Aug-Sept/18+/2vols

Batu village is a small village in Karang Tengah Municipality Demak Regency, in the side of the
famous North Java main land road. This small village is famous around the neighboring villages and
areas because of the fact that 80% out of the 600 villagers, every Friday, will go to the street or
mosques for begging money from the Friday pilgrimage people. To get more money, they will take
their children with them because people will tend give money (or more money) to the children rather
than to adults.
This attitude of taking the children to beg for money becomes a problem when the children have to
leave school every Friday. Furthermore, most children will prefer to go to street to beg to get money
that they can easily spend rather than staying at school. As the result, the number of drop out children
from school is quite high.
Based on this condition, one of local NGOs working for the street children initiated an education
project for the children by providing additional lesson in the afternoon for Math and English so that the
children could get better mark and understanding of the subjects at school. It is expected that if the
children get better mark and understanding at school then they and their parents will be proud of their
work and the parents will not take them to the street for begging money anymore.
Unfortunately, last year, there as no more funding available for this additional activity. Thus, the local
NGO could not continue the project.
The fact that IIWC have been working together with this local NGO in the same venue for work camp
and that the work camp brought positive impact in engaging the children in the study atmosphere and
creating interesting activities for the children that positively reduce the chance and desire from parents
to take the children to the street, IIWC sees it as an opportunity to do further intervention for their
education purposes because it is very important to keep the children at school.
Aims of this project are to reduce the time spent on the street to earn money (or the chance that the
children will be taken to the street by their parents to the street) and to motivate the children to focus
more to their school, to give different perspective to the parents about education and the future of the
children, to create community based activity for the children and the community bring about the
education issue.
Work: the volunteers will be assigned for: Organizing additional English class for street children (or
children with high risk to be street children) in slump area of Batu Village in the afternoon as one of the
strategies to reduce the time spent on the street for earning money and supporting their obligatory
subject at school, Organizing leisure activities for the children on free times or public holidays
emphasizing active participation of the children and promotion of children rights, Organizing skill
development program for the children as one of the alternatives strategies to empower the children for
the future way of income generating activities and Personal and public hygiene education for the
children due to the fact that the children are living in a slum area with poor hygienic condition.
Accommodation: boarding house in a common Indonesian family (some of Indonesian family let one of
more of the rooms in their house to be rented by students or other people based on monthly basis
rent) with a simple Indonesian facilities standard.
Location: Batu Village, Karang Tengah Minucipality, Demak Regency Central Java Indonesia.
Language: English is a must, the knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language) will be
necessary because most of the target group DO NOT speak any English.

IIWC is not placing any volunteer during this period of time.

Java/World Heritage Education/ any date except Aug-Sept/18+/2vols

Project: The world heritage volunteer program which is under the framework of the UNESCO World
Heritage Education Program was officially launched in 2008. The activity initiated is still only in the
form of international workcamp highlighting the raising awareness about the necessity to protect,
preserve and promote cultural and natural heritage in general and the inscribed or potential world
heritage sites in particular.
The project furthermore aims at demonstrating the value of non-formal education as an approach to
disseminate the values and expertise developed at the inter-governmental level to a large public and
to young people in particular.
It is also aiming at exploring opportunities for a dynamic dialogue between the heritage and education
expert involved in the promotion and protection of the sites and the volunteers and youth groups
developing concrete world heritage projects to be carried out.
In general, the patrimonito projects are expected to:
 sensitise the international and local volunteers, the local community as well as the concerned
     authorities around issues related to World Heritage;
 increase the contribution by youth and voluntary service organizations to WH promotion and
preservation with activities planned, based on the concrete needs of the site and in coordination
     with the site management and local/national authorities;
 create and strengthen synergies between the local youth organisation and the local community,
site management, national and local authorities and link cooperation to the issue of sustainable
     development.
Indonesia International Work Camp has been carrying on the patrimonito project since 2008 by
organizing Borobudur International Camp. The activity was organized based on the need of the
awareness raising among the youth in protecting, promoting and preserving the world heritage site in
Indonesia especially in Borobudur and Prambanan Temple.
In 2009, the 2 weeks international work camp had successfully established a network of senior high
school students under the frame of: The Young Guardian for Borobudur temple. The project was also
launching an awareness campaign in the temple area involving the Young Guardian for Borobudur
temple and the visitors, creating educational materials in 5 different languages for the visitors to
protect and preserve the world heritage site, making posters for campaign and actively outreaching
visitors for short discussion about the future expectation of the visitors toward the existence of the
temple.
Seeing the positive results from the activity and the high motivation of the students involving in the
network, as well as the commitment from the students, local people, local stage holder and IIWC in
taking part in the effort of protection, promotion and preservation of the world heritage site, IIWC sees
the importance to continue and sustain the project into long term basis activity with Middle (or Long)
term volunteering project.
The aims of the project organized there are as follows:
 Creating an activity to increase the awareness among the youth in protecting, promoting and
preserving the world heritage site in Indonesia generally, in Borobudur and Prambanan temple
