Sustainable Packaging Certificate
The Sustainable Packaging Certificate can be a valuable asset to demonstrate to prospective or current employers that you have gained the knowledge and skills required to help an organization incorporate sustainability measures in packaging. How to Obtain the Certificate To be awarded the Certificate, participants must attend a total of 75 contact hours of training with additional online components. Participants can choose workshop topics and session formats that best suit their educational goals. For example, a full-day workshop 8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. has a onehour lunch break and therefore counts as 7.5 contact hours. Each class consists of 15 hours onsite meets (two Saturdays) and the remainder of course information is online. Classes are currently being developed which will be fully online. Details The Sustainable Packaging Certificate is very flexible, formatted to accommodate the diversity of our participants' goals and locations. Workshops will be offered in Bentonville during fall and spring and in Fayetteville during the summer. There is no required sequence for taking the workshops or for completing all of the requirements. If possible, you will want to begin with the Essentials of Sustainable Packaging, but it is not mandatory. There is no time limit for completing all of the requirements. If you take classes consecutively, the certificate can be completed within four months. Registration For your convenience, there are 6 easy ways to register. Workshop Registration Rates Registration for a one-course workshop with two Saturday sessions is $500. Other Fee Information Special team discounts are available for three or more employees from one organization. Federal financial aid is not available for this program because non-credit and part-time educational activities are not eligible. Formats The one-day sessions are held from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Workshops are held at the Shewmaker Center for Workforce Technologies in Bentonville (fall and spring) and Corporate Learning, Fayetteville (summer). Fully online courses are currently under development with a target date of spring 2010. Morning beverages are provided. XGBD 1103 Essentials of Sustainable Packaging Sustainable packaging is a course designed for packaging professionals and those interested in seeking a greater understanding of sustainability and how sustainability criteria can be effectively integrated into the packaging development process. Sustainable Packaging provides critical insights, design considerations, and innovative examples from the packaging industry. Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Location: SCWT A201 XGBD 1203 Designing Sustainable Packaging Packaging Sustainability is a comprehensive course in thinking outside the box to create practical, cost effective, and eco-responsible packaging. Participants will be able to 1) design based on informed decisions at all points throughout the packaging design process; 2) demonstrate a comprehensive overview of sustainable packaging design issues from leading practitioners, designers, engineers, marketers, psychologists, and ecologists; and, 3) describe materials and processes in current use and how they interconnect. 8/22/09 and 9/12/09

This course is an introduction to basic concepts of supply chain management such as inbound logistics and outbound logistics, demand forecasting, inventory management, warehousing, materials handling and transportation for environmental efficiency with an emphasis in sustainability. The basics of green supply chain modeling for the optimization and monitoring of a supply chain will be covered using mathematical programming models. Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Location: SCWT A201 XGBD 2103 Sustainable Packaging Scorecard This course focuses on teaching attendees how to efficiently enter packages into Wal-Mart's Sustainable Packaging Scorecard and how to use related technologies to find potential improvements. Participants will be able to: 1) demonstrate knowledge in the overview of the Sustainable Packaging Scorecard and Wal-Mart's environmental efforts; 2) demonstrate knowledge in methods for collecting packaging information; and 3) demonstrate knowledge in how metrics are calculated to make more informed purchasing decisions. XGBD 2204 Special Projects in Sustainable Packaging Through the special projects course, students gain academic knowledge and skills in the field of packaging. They also cover general problem-solving and critical thinking skills in the workplace for sustainable packaging. The combination can empower them to participate as educated citizens in the economic, political, and cultural life of their communities. Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1) plan and execute a sustainable packaging project; 2) consider creative process strategies; 3) assess technical, safety, ecological and economic considerations in the process; and, 4) provide written and oral rationales for projects based on intention and content.
