To be successful at anything you need GOALS and the more defined they are the
more effective they will be. For example, breaking bad habits could be one of your
goals. They give you something to work towards and the more effort you put in to
achieve these goals the more successful you will be as well. The reason for using the
word “SMART” is because it refers to goals that are Specific, Measurable,
Attainable, Realistic and Time-Related.
Being “Specific” about your goals means writing them out, defining them and
describing your goals. Ask yourself, What, When, Where, Why and How. Being able
to clearly visualise these goals in your head is very important.
“Measurable” means establishing some sort of criteria that will verify when you
have reached your goals and will give you that sense of achievement. For example, if
you just started out on a weight training program, one criterion could be the number
of times you go to the gym in a week.
Your goals must definitely be “Attainable”. So before you even write the goal down,
ask yourself is it possible for you to achieve this goal. A goal must always be
challenging but not to difficult where you start losing that motivation and
commitment. Remember the saying “You can achieve anything you want if you set
your mind to it”. So for your goal to be attainable it has come from within you.
“Realistic” goals must be relevant to you as an individual and must be something that
you honestly believe in. The reason for this is because you are going to be putting in a
lot of time and energy. The main reason why exercise programs fail is because of
unrealistic goal setting, so be sure not to make that mistake!
Setting a “Time-Related” goal simply means putting a deadline on your goal and
thus having something to work towards. Each and every goal you set yourself must
have a starting point and an ending point. If you don‟t do this then your goals will just
be left floating around in your head and you will slowly lose the desire and motivation.
In the end if you focus on being successful you will be and you will be one step closer
to becoming the person you have always wanted to be. Use your Goals as a road map
to your success.
The word “Tomorrow” is one that you should always avoid. People who use this
word for example „I‟ll start my weight training exercises tomorrow” are more than
likely to be unhappy, unsuccessful and unhealthy. It literally destroys lives around the
world. If you‟re a dreamer then maybe the word tomorrow exists but in reality there is
no such thing! That‟s why I always go by the saying “Live for today as there may not
be a tomorrow”.
