Our Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence,
Mission: and character, who make the world a better place.
A note from our Service Unit Managers –
Débora McCarty and Diane O’Connor
What an awesome year we have had so far! We would like to thank everyone for helping our Service Unit put together so
many events. A huge THANK YOU goes to Laura Byrd and her Troop 622 for an outstanding Thinking Day event. About
90 girls were in attendance, with 6 of the 13 troops displaying a country. They also had Chinese dancers come in with two
of the girls being from Troop 622.
We also had the Gals N Pals dance with over 115 people in attendance headed by Sonya Hall and Paula Asmus and their
Troop 4738!! They even raised over $100.00 for the Family Giving Campaign.
Several troops participated in the Cookie Share program and hundreds of cookie boxes were shipped to our soldiers in
Iraq and Fort Knox, KY. Don’t forget to praise your girl scouts for doing such a great job selling cookies.
st
Our own 1 Annual Girl Service Chase has come to an end. If you were not able to turn in your pictures and point sheet
please do whenever you can. Though your troop will not be considered for the Pizza Party prize the girls will receive a
certificate of participation. Please let us know how we did. Would you like to change anything with the Girl Service Chase?
Any suggestions are welcome!!!
th
Our next meeting is coming up on April 16 . This will be our last official meeting of the year. We’ll have a special banquet
th
night on April 30 to show how much we appreciate leaders and volunteers. The cost per person is $5. If you feel that
charging your volunteer is not fair, then please consider using troop’s funds to pay for their dinner. Several troops will do
th
that as a token of appreciation. A sign-up sheet will be available at our April 16 meeting. Keep sending us your
nominations… the more the merrier!!!
Our Flower Planting event at Sharon Woods with sister service unit Creekwood is well underway. More details will follow
via meeting and email.
Day Camp registration has already started and we hope you will participate in it with your troop. If you have any
suggestions about program please let Débora know.
th
Pick-up/drop-off and Finance Report workshop will be held on May 16 . Sally Bartlow will be available to answer any
questions you have. Just bring your receipts and she’ll help you get it done.
As always, do not hesitate to contact your Service Unit in case you need any help or have any questions.
Yours in Scouting,
Débora & Diane

Family Partnership Campaign
Funding sources for Girl Scouts are way down this year. Help! Our service unit goal is 100%
Participation! What can we do as leaders? We give of our time, our money when troop funds are
low and are seldom compensated for all the extras that we leaders give so freely. Now 'they' want
more? Think about it. Who believes more in the benefits of the Girl Scout Program? What can we
do? Have the girls tell the story. Why do you enjoy scouts? What changes have you noticed in the
girls? Have the girls write a letter or have a parent write a letter to send to all the parents asking
for their support. Why? Girl Scouting reaches beyond the troop. Your support reaches the girls that
could not join without trained leaders or financial support. Your support reaches each and every
one of us as we use the resources provided to us by the council paid staff.
We have a need. We need to support the Family Partnership Campaign with our hearts, our girl's
successes and our creativity. How can we as a team ensure the success of our fund raising
campaign? We need your support!
Make a donation to the Family Partnership Campaign in honor of your
daughter, mom, leader or that special someone and a card will be sent
to the person you are honoring by your gift.
The Family Partnership Campaign started February 1st.

Destinations!!!! What is Destinations? A Destination is your chance to go somewhere new, do something
different, and meet people from everywhere you can imagine.
Things to Know:
You can choose from many types of events. See what life is really like for an M.D. or camp in the green
depths of the Costa Rican rainforest.
You can travel around the corner or around the globe.
Don't be intimidated by the price. Many of the events are offered at reduced prices from what the public
would be charged. Plus, there may be funding from your local Girl Scout council and Girl Scouts of the
USA can help you with ideas for raising money for your trip.
A Destination Match
There are six categories of destinations. Which one is right for you?
International—events outside of the U.S.
Outdoors—events ranging from learning outdoor skills to Outward Bound challenges on land or sea.
Science — Events that take science to a new level. Learn animal behavior or what a doctor's life is like.
People—events that visit cities and countryside’s so you can experience the culture of new places.
Apprenticeships — events that give you hands-on, real-life experience in a potential career field.
Getaways—Two- to four-day events all over the country, that don't require the Girl Scout destinations
application.
Here is the link to the website as well. There are bunch of different pages for you to look at.
http://www.studio2b.org/escape/destinations/destinations_411.asp
All interested Cadetes, Seniors, and Juliettes.
We are also going to start our own Association for Cadete, Senior and our older Juliettes For anyone
interested in attending. We would like to meet once a month or every other month, working on anything the
girls would like to pursue.....Community Service., careers, field trips, camping, seeing college campuses, bigger
and better trips to say to NYC or Chicago to the Smokies or Hershey PA or even take Amtrak to DC. etc. This
will be for all interested girls in our service unit. Do need adults or leaders to help advice. All interested can

Girl Scouts Celebrate 95 Years of Leadership and Service
For nearly a century, the Girl Scout Movement has played a pivotal role in America’s history with a
focus on developing young women with the necessary skills to be leaders who make a difference
in their world. This initial vision was that of Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low, when she
gathered 18 girls as the first Girl Scout troop in Savannah, Ga., on March 12, 1912.
Throughout history, Girl Scouts have taken leadership roles in their community. Today, with 3.6
million members, Girl Scouts continues to develop girls' leadership skills and prepare them for their
futures as successful women—whether as businesswomen, community leaders or heads of
households—who contribute to making the world a better place.
Girl Scouts Go Green for 95th Anniversary!
Following in the rich history and tradition of Girl Scouting, Girl Scouts of the USA is joining The
Future of Life Inc. in a nationwide community service project that promotes environmental
awareness and civic responsibility. Throughout the Girl Scouts 95th year, Girl Scouts will plant up
to 30,000 trees nationwide, making a significant impact on the environment.
This initiative began on March 12, the Girl Scout birthday and the start of ―Make the World a Better
Place‖ week. Girl Scout CEO Kathy Cloninger, Future of Life Director Bernard J. David, and Girl
Scouts from the New York metro area came together for a ceremonial tree planting at Edith Macy
Conference Center in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. This location and natural setting is the same site where
Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low joined delegates from 29 countries in a tree-planting
ceremony at the Fourth International Conference in 1926.
This tree-planting project is part of a larger Future of Life initiative called Trees for the 21st
Century, which will encourage all girls to take a leadership role to improve their communities and
discover and appreciate the Earth and all of its natural elements—an inherent part of Girl Scouting
since its founding in 1912. For more information on Girl Scout programs creating environmental
awareness, visit our environmental program page.
