           Partnership Working
• prevent gaps and overlaps through an integrated
  approach
• ensure that all the needs of this group of vulnerable
children and young people are addressed
• provide best value
• It is also envisaged that other service providers such as

together for young people in Dumfries and Galloway
                         Service Aims
• To identify and engage young people who are involved in lifestyles and
associated behaviours which will ultimately compromise their well-being and
potentially lead to them being further disenfranchised within their own
    community.
• Support young people involved with the Mentoring Service in identifying and
engaging with services that will enhance and ultimately benefit their life
situations. This would also contribute to an overall increase in the uptake of
    information, advice and support services.
• Being part of a comprehensive range of services in tackling the incidence of
youth offending and substance misuse and ultimately contributing to safer
    and more inclusive communities.
• To increase the number of young people who have a level of self-esteem,
skills and well being which equips them to constructively contribute to the
social and economic infrastructure of communities.
• Through appropriate use of mentoring and the positive social modelling
provided by the mentor, increase the likelihood of social inclusion and
integration of the young person within their own communities, thus
contributing to the culture of active citizenship.

– “I am excited all week about meeting my mentor”.
– “Sometimes it is good to talk to someone who isn’t
tangled up in your life but you know well enough to
  feel comfortable to talk to.”
– “Sometimes it can give you a new way of looking at
things or it can just be good to offload and be listened
to. It is also fun to get out and try new things.”
– “It has made a difference to my life. I am not in as
much trouble any more because I have something to
  do.”
– “My mentor listens to me and doesn’t judge me.”
– “I am now going to the gym twice a week instead of
  hanging about with my friends.”

                   Views of Parents
• “I have felt completely involved in the service and my son’s total behaviour
and attitude has changed for the better. The mentor was always there if we
needed him and was very easy to talk to. He has become like a family
    friend.”

• “My son looked forward to meeting his mentor each week and our
relationship improved because he was getting to do activities which he
enjoyed. It is a very good service and should be open to more young
people. My son really benefited because he had someone to talk to when I
    couldn’t be there for him.”

• “My daughter’s Mentor has supported her through problems she found
difficult to share with me. This alleviated some of the tension between us.
We have reached an understanding to respect each other’s views and
opinions by sitting down explaining how we feel in a calm way.”

                 Views of Mentors
• “Mentoring is fun. There can be tears, upsets, problems and
stresses but most of all I feel that I am giving something back to the
community. You support the young person and their family by
helping to solve problems and reassuring them that things can
  improve”.
• “I have been working as a mentor for over 4 years and can honestly
describe it as a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding experience. At
times the role can be challenging, requiring patience and
perseverance, but it is satisfying to watch levels of trust and
friendship develop between the young person and the mentor”
• “Young people appreciate the opportunity to spend time with
someone who is prepared to listen, be non judgemental or overly
critical and who can offer advice and guidance when required.”
• “I think the service is excellent, it is good to get positive feed back
from the young person and their family. It makes it worthwhile when
you hear the young person saying that he feels that I will help keep
him out of trouble, as he is no longer bored”.
