Educator 500 Project form Page: Applicant Information Project Overview Project Detail Approval Comments Educator 500 Project Title Student Career e-Portfolios Educator 500 Project Summary (Please describe your project success story in 300 words or less) Using Web 2.0 technology, students at The Center for Arts and Technology are collecting artifacts representative of their career and technical program, collaborating with career and technical teachers as well as academic teachers to create a digital career portfolio. The combination of web 2.0 technologies allow for student teacher collaboration across the curriculum using a public wiki as the delivery site. Students follow a sample e-portfolio and all the components of the portfolio's major deliverables are laid out in Moodle, our course management system. The portfolio encompasses all the necessary components for the transition from school to career or college admission. All 12th grade students will be presenting their portfolios as part of their final graduation project at CAT Pickering. Career and Technical teachers and Academic teachers have joined forces in a Professional Learning Community to collaborate on the project's long term and short term goals in a effort to collaborate with students in the creation a final product that is organized, student centered and rich in content. Educator 500 Project form Page: Applicant Information Project Overview Project Detail Approval Comments
Detailed Project Description The project description will be posted on the Educator 500 Project Detail page of our website for other educators to use as a resource. Please be informative and concise in your answers (1,200 words maximum for questions 1-5).
1. What is unique about the program or project developed? The e-portfolio project is unique because it allows every student who attends The Center for Arts and Technology, full or part time, to have a final portfolio product that is completely web based. The portfolio is designed in a wiki using Wetpaint.com. While the e-portfolio can be printed and distributed to potential employers or college admission offices, it is readily accessible on the web from any computer resulting in a reduction of paper usage, a less cumbersome binder type portfolio and it is easily updated and managed by the student post graduation. The e-portfolio is easily maintained and offers collaborative and viewing privileges granted by the student to whomever they invite. It is a cross curriculum application. The advantage of a career e-portfolio to students is the opportunity to keep it current and the ease at which it is delivered to potential employers/post secondary institutions. We established a Professional Learning Community of Academic and Career and Technical Teachers to collaborate in the creation, development and school wide support of the e-portfolio and to over see its implementation. 2. List project goals and how they meet student needs. The main goal of the project is to have students complete their 4 year high school education with a comprehensive career e-portfolio that demonstrates the abilities and talents they have achieved over their 4 year tenure at CAT. It is intended to be a show case of work and related competencies, of their growth and improvement both in their career and academic studies and a chance for them to reflect on their achievements. The Professional Learning Community identified 2 main project goals for 2008-2009 school year. First that all current seniors would have an e-portfolio incorporated into their final career project presentations. The goals includes action steps of teacher training, senior class meetings to help the students understand the process of e-portfolio development and demonstrations of how to invite collaborators to guide them through the process. Support staff trainings are also offered to allow all faculty and staff to assist students in the process. It is a school wide collaboration building student's 21st century skills. 3. Describe project activities. Every student at the CAT follows the outlined activities year by year with 2 major deliverables due at the completion of each school year. Project activities include: Cover Letter, Resume, Career Plan, Career Preparation, Research Assignment & Sr. Project, Job Shadowing Report, Thank You Letter, Community Service, Achievements & Awards, Talent Profile Section, Portfolio Evaluation & Job Interview. In 9th grade each student is responsible for: Major Portfolio Deliverable: Career Plan, I-Search paper contrasting 3 careers. Major Tasks: ACRN Career Decision Making Tool Reports, First Draft of Career Plan Form, I-Search paper on 3 Careers. In 10th grade each student is responsible for: Major Portfolio Deliverable: Career Research Paper. Major Tasks: Topic Form, Notecards, Rough Draft, & Final Draft. Update Career Plan. In 11th grade each student is responsible for: Major Portfolio Deliverable: Job Shadow Experience, Update Career Plan. Major Tasks: Plan Job Shadow Experience, Post Shadow Reports, & Job Shadow Presentation in CTE class. In 12th grade each student is responsible for: Major Portfolio Deliverable: Technical Research Paper, Resume and media documentation of Sr. Project product, Sr. level e-Portfolio. Major Tasks: Research Paper, Sr. Project, Final Portfolio Review, and Mock Interviews. The role of the Professional Learning Community is to plan the steps to see that faculty, staff, and students are prepared to complete a final comprehensive career e-portfolio. 4. Rubrics were developed by the Professional Learning Community and used for each step of the portfolio development. A final e-portfolio rubric was designed to insure students met the criteria for a final comprehensive, content rich product representative of their 4 years as a student of our Career and Technical High School. The rubric is categories: Welcome Page, Content, Presentation and Overall Appearance. Students are assessed in three levels from begins, meets or exceeds the portfolio requirements. This e-portfolio is used to deliver the student's documentation (written and multimedia) of their senior career and technical project which are presented to a panel of administrators and career experts. The final project is a senior graduation requirement. The e-portfolio is a means to deliver the graduation project to a panel. The e-portfolio is assessed as a presentation but separately from the Senior Graduation Project although it is included as a percentage of the overall graduation project grade. 5. How is collaboration an important factor in the success of this project? (Describe the resources gained through partnering such as volunteers, funds and materials.) Collaboration is the key component to the success of a student career e-portfolio. Collaboration between student and teachers is critical in the step by step process over the student's tenure at CAT. Also peer to peer collaboration will be a key focus to sharing and receiving feedback of the final portfolio. Teachers are invited to student portfolios as collaborators in the process. In addition, a Professional Learning Community made up of Career and Technical and Academic teachers who each play a key role the student's portfolio development, delivery, and content allows for a wide variety of collaborative activities. The role of the Professional Learning Community is to insure student organization and step by step goal setting. These are necessary to the success of the final e-portfolio project. The Professional Learning Community meets monthly for brainstorming sessions, long term and short term goal setting for delivery of each of the e-portfolio's deliverables, planning faculty and staff in service training to help faculty and staff members with project management and overseeing student work. Administrators are also invited to the meetings and attend regularly to collaborate and support the efforts of the team. This project relies entirely on the collaboration of the school community as a whole. Supplemental Materials 1. Rubric_for_Final_e_portfolio.pdf 2. 3.
