      expansive.

                                                            3

                                     (Torrance, 1967, p. 189)

                                                                4
Our thinking, limiting beliefs or language use...
                             “That’s not my area”
“The right answer”

“That’s not logical” “Avoid ambiguity”

“Follow the rules” “Don’t be foolish”

“Be practical” “To err is wrong”
“Play is frivolous”
                             “I’m not creative”
                                             (Van Oech, 1990, p. 11)

                                                                       5
Lateral Thinking/Divergent Vertical Thinking/Convergent
Changes Chooses
Always looks for a better solution Seeks to judge what’s right
Looks for questions Looks for answers
Only wrong is rigidity Uses yes/no
Provocative Analytical
Makes deliberate jumps Things follow directly
Explores least likely directions Goes in most likely direction
Open-ended Closed

                                                                     6
 So often we rush to find answers, solutions, results but
don’t appreciate the wisdom in “holding” the question.

 In particular, holding it with others and from different
 perspectives.

                                                             7
 The Ancient Tribes of the First Peoples of the Native
Americans used a process which enables this approach
through the use of the medicine wheel and asks two
 fundamental questions:
 What is needed, from our perspective
  in this question?
 How do we respond?
