The museum’s inaugural exhibit, On Track: Transit in the American City, In Lowell and Across America, presents the history of public transit in Lowell within the context of the broader American transit story. The exhibit draws heavily from the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. Opening day for the new National Streetcar Museum at Lowell, which is located in the Mack Building at 25 Shattuck Street in downtown Lowell, will be launched with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11:00 am. The public is then invited to join in the opening day festivities, which will run from 11:00 a.m. -5:00 p.m. The fun and excitement of a trolley era town fair will be recreated in the Mack Plaza with a barbershop quartet, free popcorn, balloons and old-time root beer. Visitors can tour the exhibit, On Track: Transit in the American City, or take a 5-cent trolley ride on an original New Orleans Streetcar brought to Lowell from Seashore’s preeminent streetcar collection in Kennebunkport, Maine. Admission to the Museum is $2.00 for adults and $1.00 for seniors and children 12 and under. Regular hours of operation for the museum and trolley tours will be Thursday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. beginning June 28thFor further information, call the Museum at 978-275-1821.
