Top Ten Ways to Enjoy the River Safely 1. Wear your life jacket. Make sure your child wears a life jacket! 2. Use alcohol responsibly. Many river accidents involve alcohol. 3. Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to prevent sunburn. Water reflects the rays of the sun giving you a double dose of ultraviolet light. 4. Avoid trees that have fallen in the river. They can catch and overturn your canoe, kayak, or inner tube. 5. Don’t jump from cliffs, bridges, or trees. 6. Build your campfire in a fire ring and put it out cold before you leave. 7. Protect your feet with river shoes, water sandals, or old shoes. Fish hooks, glass, and rocks can injure your feet. 8. Bring your own drinking water. Treat river water before drinking to avoid giardia, a serious stomach irritant. 9. Check for ticks often and know the symptoms of Lyme disease. Deer ticks are common along the Riverway and some carry the bacteria that cause the disease. 10. Know how to identify poison ivy and avoid contact. It grows along forest edges and can cause severe itching and rash.

“Right away I knew it was a new species.” William Smith In November of 1989, William Smith, a biologist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, collected half a dozen larvae that looked just like ones he had collected on previous trips to County O Landing on the St. Croix River. Back in the lab, the larvae climbed out of the aquarium water, shed their skin, and emerged into magnificent clear-winged adults with bulging, bright green eyes, emerald thorax, and black abdomen with bright yellow markings. After an exhaustive search of the scientific literature, Smith described a new species which he named the St. Croix snaketail dragonfly.
St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, part of your National Park System, is celebrating 40 years as one of the nation’s first wild and scenic rivers. Discover more about the Riverway at www.nps.gov/sacn.
