A No-Kill Shelter Spring 2009 OF OCEAN CITY MEET OUR NEW BEST BUD! (Of the Board of Directors) We would like to take this opportunity to introduce to you Bonnie Durphy, our new President of the Board of Directors. Bonnie has been a member of the board for the past two years where she has served as both Volunteer Coordinator and Assistant Treasurer. Before she was a member of the board, Bonnie started off at the shelter as a volunteer. About three years ago, she came in and asked the manager “What job does no one else want to do?” Bonnie got started cleaning the cat room and she has taken that philosophy with her as she continues to get more involved at the HSOC, quickly proving there is no job too big or too small for her. Whether the cat room needs to be cleaned or a major event for the shelter needs to be planned, Bonnie rolls up her sleeves and gets to work. Bonnie brings with her a tremendous amount of experience. Before she retired, she ran a large family business and she has served on several executive boards in the past including the Board of Education in Abington, PA while her children were in school. She comes from a family of animal lovers and advocates; one of her sons is a veterinarian. Bonnie’s granddaughter is a shelter employee and she is also a proud adopter of a shelter dog. Missy is the new pride and joy at the Durphy household (adopted December 2007). With Bonnie as President we are sure to continue in our proud tradition of being a top ranked animal shelter. This is Bud. He is a 5 year old Pug who was picked up as a stray. Bud is full of energy and loves everyone. He is as friendly as they come and would make a wonderful addition to your family. While a 5 year old, pure bred Pug might sound highly adoptable, a 5 year old pure bred Pug that needs a wheel chair might not be so desirable. At some point in Bud’s life it is believed that he was hit by a car and his injuries were never set properly. This injury has caused very limited mobility in his back legs and as a result he suffers from some muscle atrophy. He is able to walk for short distances and he does move around pretty fast but he cannot stay on all fours for long. Eventually his back legs give out and he collapses. Bud will need a specially designed “wheel-chair” to ensure he gets the best quality of life possible. If you would like to make a special contribution to the “Bud Fund” to help with the costs of Bud’s care, please see the donation form on page 5 of this newsletter. Humans have been cruel and neglectful to poor Bud. Help us show Bud how loving and caring humans can actually be. Picture left is what Bud will look like with his new set of designer wheels! Bonnie is pictured above with her adopted Rottweiler mix, Missy Over the past year our generous donors have made it possible for us to make many much needed changes and upgrades at the shelter. We have collected donations to build a new play area for our shelter dogs and we are pleased to report that “Paw Safari” is nearly complete. The area is soon to be equipped with agility equipment, soft padding and plenty of room for our dogs to run, play, and chase after toys, off of there leases. As the housing market and economy continue to struggle we are seeing more of our older and special needs animals staying at the shelter longer and longer before we can place them into new homes. Paw Safari will be a blessing for these animals who just want a back yard to play in like any other dog. We have a new shelter alliance with Cumberland and Atlantic County SPCAs, Atlantic County Animal Shelter, and Beacon Animal Shelter. It is our belief that by working together we can all provide better care for homeless animals in South Jersey. We have enhanced our humane education programs during the school year and for the summer program. We are now visiting schools and holding humane education assemblies. So far this year 557 students have received Humane Education lessons from the HSOC. The HSOC also enjoys a great partnership with the City of Ocean City. We owe much gratitude to the departWe have also added new walls to our dog kennels to ments of Community Services/Recreation and Public Works help reduce the stress on new dogs when they first arrive. for all the assistance they have provided us in the past The walls also help in disease prevention, make the kennels year’s improvements and developments, and for their continmuch easier to clean and help with sound proofing. ued support. We have made upgrades in our electronic records system and have all our pets information stored electronically for easier access. Because of Pet Point, our new electronic records system, we are now able to offer a free thirty day trial of Shelter Care vet insurance for every animal adopted from the shelter. We have a new vet of record, Dr. Matt Hamilton, who comes to the shelter to treat many of our feral cats who are very difficult to care for. This greatly reduces the stress on the animal and makes it much easier for us to treat them. We have a new emergency plan in case of a disaster. The plan has already been accepted by the City of Ocean City, Cape May County, and The State of New Jersey. In case a natural or man-made disaster should ever effect the operations of the shelter we have assembled a team of staff and volunteers throughout the community to make sure every one of our animals is safely transported and cared for until we can bring them back. The disaster plan also covers animals from the community who’s owners are unable to evacuate them. We know times are tough right now but we want you to know that every dollar donated is thoroughly appreciated and goes to good use. We thank you so much for any contribution you can make no matter how big or small. We know that in these economic times it is difficult to give. We are careful with every penny donated to make sure it goes to use in helping our animals. As Executive Director, I am proud of the dedicated staff, friendly volunteers and our Board of Directors. I encourage everyone to stop by and meet the staff and find ways that you can assist our shelter. Thanks again for all your kind donations and/or opening up your homes and adopting one of our dogs or cats. Even now when times are tough, you have made it possible for us to grow and develop as a shelter. Thank you so much for your support. Regards, Bill Hollingsworth Executive Director A BARK FAR WORSE THAN HIS BITE...REX’S STORY Rex is a very sweet dog. Just ask any of the staff members or volunteers at the HSOC and they could go on for days about how cuddly he is. He is about fifty pounds but he thinks he is the size of a Chihuahua. A perfect afternoon for Rex would be a good long walk and then squeezing himself onto your lap for a few hours of quiet time. Rex’s story is a sad one. He once had a home and a family that loved him. Sadly, Rex could not move into the assisted living facility where his human mother would be living from now on and Rex came to the shelter. He has been waiting for a new forever home since January of 2008. Why would such a sweet dog be waiting so long? He has a LOUD bark. No matter how many times we tell people that is just Rex’s funny way of saying “hi,” he scares people away. On top of that he doesn’t like cats and he is scared of young children. Even with all of his funny ways we know that there is a perfect home out there for him somewhere and we just ask that you try and remember when you come in to visit Rex that he means no harm. He is just excited to see you. Won’t you consider making this big love the newest member of your family? Here is Rex enjoying the new kennel’s at the HSOC. Won’t you come in and visit Rex? Rex would make a great watch dog and an even better fetch companion! It’s almost time for our annual “dog walk on the Boardwalk.” Kick off the summer season while helping to raise money for the homeless animals at the HSOC. Bring the whole family! The HSOC was shocked and saddened by his sudden passing. Pat was a volunteer dog walker at the shelter and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever he was needed. He was a good friend to the animals, staff, and other volunteers and his presence is surely missed. We would like to offer our condolences to his friends and family and we thank Pat once again for his tremendous service to the animals. In the last issue of Woof-n-Paws we introduced you to several of our special needs animals. We are happy to report that two of them have found wonderful forever homes and are doing very well and we have had several other special needs animals come through the shelter that we have been able to place. The management at the HSOC holds a philosophy that every animal deserves a chance even if they need special help. We cannot turn our backs on these animals and animals like them just because they are expensive to care for or because they are automatically deemed “unadoptable” by some shelters’ standards. Because of our adopters and supporters these animals will all get a second chance at life. If you would like to sponsor a special needs animal please indicate so on the donation form on page 6 of this newsletter. We received tons of calls about Sophie, our special black lab who happened to be blind. Sophie has been adopted by the Ferraren family of Toms River and she is doing very well. She had to have surgery to remove one of her eyes as it was causing her a tremendous amount of discomfort. Now she is all healed and loves her new home. We also introduced you to Digger. Digger is a very friendly, curious, playful cat who just happens to have FIV, the feline version of HIV. When Kathy Sendler and her daughters, Crystal and Jaclyn heard about this wonderful cat they knew they just had to take him home. Digger adjusted to his new surroundings immediately and greets every visitor at the door and promptly sits in their lap as soon as they sit down. As you can see he is also enjoying his daily piggy back ride. Holly was a very popular dog at the shelter. She is very friendly and very quiet. She is almost completely deaf and that made some people think she would be hard to care for. She also had 2 benign tumors removed from her ear and leg and had some stitches that didn't look to attractive at first. Holly is a perfect example of a wonderful dog that doesn’t need any special care, just a little patience. Fortunately Kathy Vance came into the shelter and fell in love with Holly. Now Holly loves her new home and her new forever mom! Jewel was recently adopted from the HSOC. Jewel is a special needs cats that has what is called Cerebellar Hypoplasia, or CH for short. Basically the condition is an underdeveloped cerebellum. This condition which can be mild to severe affects their ability to walk, and also can include tremors. Jewel, who’s is just 12 weeks old, is able to get around and play with her siblings even though she stumbles, tumbles, and sometimes flips while chasing them. She is very determined, and has quite an appetite. Like any other kitten she plays until she tires and then crashes. She has become the new love of Janice Branwood’s life. Janice is also a volunteer dog walker at the HSOC. HSOC SPAY/NEUTER CLINIC For a form to have your cat or dog spayed or neutered, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to: H.S.O.C., P.O.
