It coincided, more and less, with the Presidential election of 1844. The new states of Texas and Iowa were added during this Congress, electing their Representatives in 1846. Darkhorse candidate James K. Polk, a Democrat, won the White House in 1844 on a campaign advocating territorial expansion, but his party lost several seats. However, they kept their large majority. The American Party, based on anti-immigration and antiCatholic feelings, also picked up its first seats in Congress. The fragmentation of votes by this new party, combined with a generally negative political environment cause by dislike of outgoing president John Tyler, led to the slight Democratic loses.
