Step 2
Choose the best method of recruitment for your business
The most successful outcome will depend upon the amount of preparation you do before recruitment. There are many ways to attract a pool of suitable applicants. The method you choose will depend on the time and resources you can afford and the nature of your business. Employers looking specifically for indigenous employees visit www.workplace.gov.au and see the Indigenous Employment Policy for more information. Options to consider include: Carry out the process yourself Advantages −You control the process. You can follow-up any applicant of interest who may not meet the job and person requirements directly but who could offer something just as valuable to your business. Disadvantages − Most small business employers are not trained in Human Resource procedures. The process can be time and resource expensive. If it becomes too overwhelming a task, there is a danger of ‘giving someone a go’ just to get the process over and done with or of withdrawing from the process altogether. It is possible to use many different approaches to recruitment: encourage someone you know or who has been recommended to you to apply for the position contact your local training providers−TAFE Institutes and private providers− and let them know that you want to recruit. They may place your advertisement on their job vacancies board consider students who have spent time with your business on work placement from school.
Use a private recruitment agency Advantages − Trained Human Resource consultants do the advertising, shortlisting, validation of skills and initial interviewing for you. Disadvantages − The service may be costly. Because you know your business best you still need to have done all the thinking about the job and the type of person you want before you engage a recruitment agency. Use a government-funded Job Network provider (www.worplace.gov.au) Advantages − Job Network staff will advertise and provide a pool of applicants for you to choose from. The service is free.
Disadvantages − Job Network providers have larger numbers to deal with, and may have limited time to screen the applicants and to validate skills. Use an online recruitment www.careerone.com.au ) service (e.g. www.seek.com.au or
Advantages − Over 60% of Australian job seekers now register their details with online career networks. Sifting and shortlisting of applicants is done electronically, saving time. Disadvantages − Your business must be web-enabled and ready to deal with the large numbers of applicants that will be directed to you. The service is often costly. Use a Group Training Company Advantages − Group Training Companies’ knowledge of criteria for traineeship appointments and constant exposure to the relevant processes of recruitment, matching to employer requirements, enable them to expertly identify suitable candidates whose resumes they forward to their employer clients. Bad decisions cost money It can cost thousands of dollars if recruitment is not successful. Cost factors include: employer time in the recruitment process (job descriptions, advertising, interviewing) recruitment agency costs (where used) employer/supervisor time in induction and training the recruit lower productivity as the recruit learns the task employer time spent in terminating the employment employer/supervisor time spent in catching up on work left undone or mishandled by the unsatisfactory recruit round two recruitment costs.
Investing the time and resources in getting a successful recruit represents sound business practice.
