I)                GDP Figures 2009

1.      According to the latest data published by German Statistical Office, German economy
shrank in 2009 for the first time in six years with GDP (price adjusted) declining by 5%. The
decline in the GDP was the largest since World War II. In value terms, GDP of Germany at
current prices in 2009, amounted to Euro 2407 billion. The shrinking of German economy had a
direct bearing on the highly globalised States of Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg. According to
the German Statistical Office, the Bavarian GDP declined in the year 2009 by 5% and the GDP of
Baden-Wuerttemberg declined by 7.4%. In value terms, GDP of Bavaria at current prices in 2009
amounted to Euro 429 billion and GDP of Baden-Wuerttemberg amounted to Euro 343 billion.

2.     German Government forecasts a GDP growth of 1.4 % for the year 2010. Comparative
GDP figures along with growth rates of Bavaria, Baden-Wuerttemberg and Germany are given
below.

V)        Indo-Bavarian/Baden-Wurttemberg/German Trade

3.      Reassuring hopes of a revival in international trade and growth of the world economy, the
Indo-German export-import figures showed strong signs of recovery in the initial months of 2010.
India‟s trade with the State of Bavaria increased in January 2010 by 1.64% to Euro 124 million
compared to same period in the previous year. Showing the same trend, the two-way trade with
Baden-Württemberg also increased in January 2010 by a substantial 9.68% to Euro 170 million,
compared to the same month of the previous year. Indo-German trade as a whole followed the
growth trajectory during the same period marking a growth of 6.91% to Euro 1.08 billion,
compared to January 2009. Detailed statistics on Indo-German trade are given below.

IX)      India’s Investment interest
Bavaria based auto spare parts group ZF Friedrichshafen AG ties up with Hero Motors

4.     ZF Friedrichshafen AG, Bavaria based auto spare parts group and Hero Motors Ltd. signed
a contract on March 2, 2010, establishing the joint-venture enterprise ZF Hero Chassis Systems,
securing access for ZF to India‟s booming market for small cars. ZF Friedrichshafen AG is
acquiring 50 percent of Hero Chassis Systems, including two assembly plants in Halol, around 300
miles north of Mumbai and another one in Talegaon, near Pune. Initially, some 100 employees will
be engaged in the assembly of car axles for General Motors.

5.      ZF Friedrichshafen AG is one of the world's leading automotive industry suppliers
specialising in driveline and chassis technologies. The company operates 125 plants in 26 countries
and it has a workforce of 60,000 people. ZF ranks as one of the top-10 automotive industry
suppliers worldwide. The Hero Group‟s subsidiary, Hero Honda Motors Ltd., is world‟s largest
motorcycle manufacturer and it also provides engineering services for the automotive industry,
including development and design, and also produces chassis components, including axle systems.

X)     General Economic News

3.0 percent more start-ups of larger businesses in the year 2009

6.     In the year 2009, around 154,000 larger businesses were founded in Germany, according to
the German Statistical Office, an increase if 3.0% compared to the previous year. In 2008, the
number of newly founded larger businesses in Germany declined by 2.9%, compared to 2007.
Further, around 293,000 small businesses were also founded in 2009, an increase of 2.7%
compared to 2008. In 2008, the number of newly set up small businesses decreased by 7%,
compared to 2007.

XI)    India-Related Events

Consul General’s meeting with Lord Mayor of Stuttgart: March 9, 2010

7.       Consul General and Consul (PIC) called on the Lord Mayor of Stuttgart, Dr. Wolfgang
Schuster on the 9th of March 2010 to get a feedback of his recent visit to India. The Lord Mayor
visited Mumbai to attend the sixth “Stuttgart meets Mumbai” wine festival, which has become a
symbol of the 42 year old twinning agreement and the progressing partnership between the two
cities. Industrial and cultural exchange was also part of the two day programme from 29 th to 30th
January in Mumbai. The formal meeting was preceded by an exchange of gifts and pleasantries
which attracted good media attention.

8.      Emphasising on the 42 years of enduring partnership between the two states, the Lord
Mayor stressed that cooperation is developing at a fast pace. Dr. Schuster informed that the
opening of the wine festival interspersed with the performance by Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra was
very impressive. He reiterated the strong interest of several schools and universities from the
region in widening the cooperation in student exchanges and appreciated the interest shown by
Mumbai Mayor Smt. Shraddha Jadhav in building bridges between the people of the two states. Dr.
Schuster commented that he was impressed by the dynamics of Indian democracy and wished to
carry forward the relationship with India, as he perceived lot of potential to learn from each other.
Consul General in his remarks reciprocated the sentiments expressed by the Lord Mayor. In the
ensuing questions by the media, CG elucidated Indian point of view in this regard and thanked the
Lord Mayor for his continued support.

5th Anniversary Meeting of Indo-German Business Network (IGBN): Hosted by CGI
Munich.

9.      The 5th anniversary meeting of the Indo-German Business Network (IGBN) was hosted by
Consulate General of India, Munich on March 10, 2010, at the Consulate premises. IGBN which
started its operation in 2005 conduct monthly business meetings in Munich which are normally
attended by German companies with business interests in India and also some Indian companies
which have invested in Bavaria. The meeting at Consulate was attended by 37 participants,
comprising representatives from institutions such as Bavarian Business Association (VBW),
Munich Trade Fair Group, German Centre Delhi.Gurgaon, Augsburg Chamber of Commerce,
Bavarian-Indian Centre for Business and University Cooperation (BayIND), representatives of
major companies such as MINI/BMW, Linde, TCS, Allianz, HCL, Green Rent GmbH (dealers of
Tata vehicles in Germany), media representatives, and other businessmen.

10.     Consul (PIC) welcomed the guests which was followed by 3 presentations. The
presentation by Ms. Marie Aichagui of Linde AG, on the topic „Challenges, opportunities &
highlights of building air separation plants in India‟ touched upon Linde‟s operations in India
including its recent major project to build and commission a state-of-the-art 2,550 tonnes per day
(tpd) air separation unit (ASU) at Tata Steel Ltd's plant in Jamshedpur. This was followed by Mr.

Mohammad Rehan, Coordinator of IGBN who spoke on „Globalisation of mind & Indo-German
Industry‟ wherein he briefed the participants on the growing Indo-German trade, on the increasing
number of German investment in India and the growing number of Indian companies starting
operations in Germany.

11.     Consul General gave a presentation on the topic „India Budget 2010-11‟. CG emphasised
the key priority areas of the recently announced Union budget, namely the common man driven
approach, rapid broad based inclusive growth, affirmative measures and improved delivery
mechanisms. He mentioned that in spite of the downturn in the global economy, the Indian
economy grew by 7.2 % in fiscal 2009-10, and is expected to grow at 8.7% during the financial
year 2010-11. Building on the optimism, he highlighted the target of double digit growth within the
next four years. The presentations ended with question answer session and an open discussion. A
slide show on India Tourism was screened at the beginning of the meeting. Consul General hosted
a buffet reception for all the representatives present during the meeting.

German-Indian Round Table (GIRT) Meeting, hosted by CGI Munich

12.    Consulate General of India, Munich hosted the 2nd business meeting of the year 2010 of the
Munich unit of the German-Indian Round Table (GIRT) on March 16, 2010, at the Consulate
premises. The meeting was attended by 26 participants comprising representatives from Bavarian
State Chancellery, German Centre Delhi.Gurgaon, representatives of various multinational as well
as small and medium sized companies such as Rohde & Schwarz GmbH, Fackelmann, iwis
motorsysteme GmbH, TCS, NesTech GmbH, executive of Deutsche Bank AG etc. Consul General
welcomed the guests and reiterated that GIRT is a remarkable and outstanding platform for
promotion of Indo-Bavarian/German business links. Dr. Thomas Zwissler, Vice President of GIRT
Munich briefed the participants on the agenda of the meeting which included an introductory round
of participants, a power point presentation from the specially invited speaker Mr. Abhijit
Guhathakurta, CEO, State Bank of India, Frankfurt and an open discussion/question answer round.

13.     Mr. Guhathakurta in his presentation „Indian Budget 2010-11: Challenges and the Way
Ahead‟, stressed on the key priority areas of the recently announced union budget, namely, rapid
and inclusive growth, fiscal consolidation and improved delivery mechanisms. He said that the
economic stimulus packages introduced by the Government of India to lower the impact of the
global economic crisis on India proved effective which could be rated by the 7.2% growth of the
Indian economy in fiscal 2009-10. He also highlighted the initiatives for simplification of taxation
system like the Direct Tax Code (DTC) and Goods and Service Tax (GST), which the Government
is planning to launch in April 2011. Explaining the high food inflation last year he mentioned the
major causes including delayed and sub-normal south-west monsoon and expectations of a
moderate inflation rate for the current fiscal. The presentation ended with question and answer
session. A slide show on India Tourism was screened at the beginning of the meeting. Consul
General hosted a buffet reception for all the invitees.

XII)   Trade Fairs in Germany

I.H.M. 2010

14.     I.H.M. 2010, the International Trade Fair for the craft trades and small and medium-sized
businesses took place in New Munich Trade Fair Centre from March 3-9, 2010. The range of
exhibits covered arts and crafts, metal processing, workshop equipment, home furnishings, garden
furniture, gardening tools, painter equipments, industrial craft, building materials, etc. I.H.M is an
annual fair which is primarily for retail sales and was first held in 1948. Over 153500 trade visitors
from all-over the world visited I.H.M this time while around 1000 exhibitors exhibited their
products and services in the fair. I.H.M. 2010 was inaugurated by German Economic Minister Mr.

Rainer Bruederle on March 3, 2010. German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel also visited I.H.M and
participated in the event „Munich Summit Talk of German Economy 2010‟ on March 5 at the
Munich Trade Fair Centre. Fourteen Indian companies participated in the fair, who exhibited home
furnishings, scarves, shawls, etc. Consul (PIC) attended the inaugural of the fair and also visited
the Indian exhibitors. I.H.M. 2011 will be held from March 16-22, 2011 at the same place.

Analytica 2010

15.     Analytica 2010, the 22nd International Trade Fair for instrumental analysis, laboratory
technology and biotechnology with Analytica Conference was held in the New Munich Trade Fair
Centre from March 23-26, 2010. The range of exhibits covered analytical and diagnostic
equipment and methods, laboratory systems, pharmacology, etc. Analytica is being held every two
years since 1968. A total of 1038 exhibitors from 37 countries displayed their products and
services in Analytica 2010. Around 33000 trade visitors from 120 countries visited the fair. Six
Indian companies exhibited their products and services in Analytica 2010. Consul (PIC) visited the
trade fair and interacted with the participants. The Indian companies were in general positive with
the number of responses/trade queries received at Analytica 2010. Taking advantage of India‟s
tremendous potential in this specialised sector, Munich Trade Fair Group the organiser of
Analytica, are also organising Analytica fairs once in every two years in Hyderabad titled
„Analytica Anacon India‟. The next Analytica trade fair in Munich will be held from April 17-20,
2012.

IWA & Outdoor Classics 2010

16.     IWA & Outdoor Classics 2010, the 37th International Trade Fair for hunting and sporting
arms, outdoor articles and accessories was held in the Nuremberg Exhibition Centre from March
12-15, 2010. IWA & Outdoor Classics is an annual trade fair and was first started in 1974. A
record number of 1141 exhibitors from 55 countries exhibited their products and services in the
fair. The fair attracted 32214 trade visitors from allover the world. Two Indian companies
participated in the trade fair. The next IWA & Outdoor classics will be held from March 11-14,
2011 at the same venue.

XIII) Publicity of Trade Fairs/Events Conducted in India

INDIASOFT 2010

17.      INDIASOFT 2010, India‟s exclusive international IT exhibition, was held at Jaipur, from
March 10-12, 2010. The organisers, Electronics and Computer Software export Promotion Council
(ESC) offered free economy class airticket and accommodation to selected software companies
from Germany for participation in the B2B IT events conducted in the sidelines of INDIASOFT
2010. CGI Munich disseminated the ESC‟s invitation among suitable German companies located
in its jurisdiction of Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg. Out of the 5 German companies who were
selected to INDIASOFT 2010, 3 were from the jurisdiction of CGI Munich, namely DCS Consult
GmbH, EnTeco GmbH, and Logis Informatik GmbH.
