Kemp ISD Jacket Journal Congratulations! You finished! BY: Ashlee Wasek How rapidly we have moved from spring into summer, and what a delight this pleasant weather has been! It hardly seems possible that the end of another school year is upon us, but the calendar says that it is so. “I can’t wait!” exclaims Mary Otto. Congratulations go to those who have successfully completed the school year and will soon graduate. This is a significant accomplishment, an important first step in ensuring your future. Now you are free to do what you please. You can go to college if you want, and most of you are 18 and may even want to get your own house or apartment. “I’m so excited," says Jessica Johnson, “and at the same time I’m in total shock.” Students who are interested in the senior slide show should go and see Dr. Sue. “I love the slide show, it was wonderful.” says Paulina Uribe. The slide show will be shown at graduation on May 30th. Everyone looks forward to see you there. All of Kemp High School’s best wishes go to you. Please have a warm, wonderful, memorable summer. Inside this issue: STUDENT OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL BAD LUCK 2 2 A SPECIAL GIFT 3 STUDENT OF THE MONTH FOR MAY 4 THE POWER LIFTING CHAMPION By: Mary Otto Words could not explain the excitement! Chris Murray, junior, was obviously “pumped” about his finish at the state power lifting championship. Chris placed sixth out of a thousand other lifters. The day Chris left for the state contest, he received a send-off from the entire school. “It made me feel really good that my school was that supportive.” Chris has been involved with power lifting for three years, when he began lifting as a freshman after one of his coaches encouraged him to start. He has improved himself each year by working hard and doing what has to be done. To qualify for regionals, Chris had to lift 950 pounds; then he had to improve his total for the state competition. One of Chris’ inspirations for the state competition was his friendship with Nick Lane. “Nick was not only my really good friends; he was also my teammate in power lifting since my freshman year. So I dedicated my lifting at state to him.” SMILES ALL AROUND LAURA RENFRO NAMED STUDENT OF THE MONTH FOR APRIL By Ashlee Wasek Every month a new student is chosen for his or her positive attitudes and good work habits at school. This month the Student of the Month is Laura Renfro a senior at Kemp High School. Laura is described by those who know her as “an awesome, pretty, spunky, intelligent, and imaginative girl who no matter how bad of a mood you’re in, she will always make you smile.” “She is kind, loving and she is a great actress,” says Mary Otto, “She is more than likely to succeed in life.” Laura has been going to KHS for her whole life and now it’s time for her to graduate so she will be missed by all. Being involved in so many school activities such as UIL, Spanish Club, and Beta Club shows her commitment and how widely she is known all around. “I knew Laura my freshman year here, she’s just so popular” (Jessica Skirko) Students selected for the KHS Student of the Month Award must demonstrate good academic effort, attend school regularly, and be considerate of others. The purpose of the recognition is to support students who show good potential as future leaders. BAD LUCK By Mary Otto and Ashlee Wasek Senior Robert Adams was in over his “head” when he decided to make a bet with the UIL spelling team. Robert said that if the UIL team made it to state, then he would get his head shaved. One hundred percent sure that they wouldn’t make it, Robert continued to brag and tell them that they weren’t going to make it. The UIL team—made up of Meagan Lacy, Briana McCarty, Jordan Shumway, and Hannah Carpenter—worked extra hard this year but were not sure if it were enough. The results came in……. THEY MADE IT!! The team qualified for State by winning first place at the regional competition. One of the first calls made was to Robert, who had his head shaved. “ I couldn’t believe it,” Robert said, “I didn’t actually believe they were going to do it.” Robert’s new look has attracted attention. “I love it,” says Hilary Ables, “I really do!” Many people like the new Robert, but some also say it makes him look like a whole different person. Page 2 Volume 1, Issue 1 A Special Gift By: Ashlee Wasek Every year at KHS, something wonderful occurs. This year, however, something more than wonderful has happened, and it has to do with our beloved assistant principal, Mrs. Kirkpatrick. Five months ago, Mrs. Kirkpatrick was told she was going to have a baby girl. “I feel blessed by God,” she says. To get ready for the new baby, she has been preparing at her home. “I’m reorganizing, having the house painted, adding new carpet, and decorating the baby’s room.” Kelsey Kirkpatrick (Mrs. Kirkpatrick’s daughter) says that she is “excited” About having a new baby sister. “I’m sure that because of her I’ll want to do better,” Kelsey says, “so I can be a good example for her.” Kelsey has also been preparing for the new baby. “I’m very excited but don’t know what to expect. I want to make sure that I’m always there for her when she needs me.” Mrs. Kirkpatrick asks that the students of KHS suggest a name for the baby. If any student is interested, see Ms. Wagner in the library. The new baby is due the first of July and will be waited for with great anticipation. Mrs. Kirkpatrick remarks “I don’t know what God has in store for my family and me in the future, but I am ecstatic about all the plethora of possibilities.” Kelsey Kirkpatrick (above) is looking forward to being a “Big Sister” Page 4 Volume 1, Issue 1 ALWAYS BE OPTIMISTIC Student of the month for May Works hard to earn her recognition BY MARY OTTO; ASHLEE WASEK Paulina Uribe has been named the KHS Student of the Month for May.
