1.1 Business Overview
Headquartered at Fairlands, Mobile Telephone Networks (MTN) Group Limited is a South
African-based telecommunication company. The company provides GSM cellular services to
retail & corporate customers and business solutions to SMEs and large enterprises. Its
wholly owned subsidiaries are MTN Holdings Limited, MTN Service Provider Limited, MTN
International (Mauritius) Limited, Verizon South Africa, Arobase Telecom and Afnet. MTN
Group Limited operates across 21 countries in Africa and the Middle East.


1.2 Key Figures
MTN Group Limited recorded revenues of $10,828.8 million (R73,145 million) during the
fiscal year ended 31st December 2007, which was up from $7,415.4 million (R51,595
million) during the fiscal year ended 31st December 2006. In terms of US dollars, this
translated to an increase of 46.0 percent, which is mainly attributed to exchange rate
fluctuations. In terms of South African Rand, the increase in revenue was 41.7 percent.
The net profit witnessed a change to $1,764.1 million (R11,916 million) in fiscal year 2007
from $1,738.9 million (R12,099 million) in fiscal year 2006. This resulted in an increase of
1.4 percent in terms of US dollars. In terms of South African Rand, the decrease in net
profit was 1.5 percent.
The company’s total assets witnessed an increase to $17,112 million (R1,15,586 million) in
fiscal year 2007 from $13,929.3 million (R96,917 million) in fiscal year 2006.
MTN Group Limited employed 14,878 people in fiscal year 2007.

According to TechNavio estimates, MTN Group Limited spent $4,764.6 million on IT products
and services (including communication) in the fiscal year 2007 up from $3,262.7 million
spent in the fiscal year 2006.
