1. Introduction
China, having one of the largest Healthcare IT market in Asia-Pacific, has been undergoing
many improvisations in the last five years. Through the adoption of IT in the healthcare
sector there has been standardization of activities, provision of better facilities and
incorporation of data management among the healthcare organizations.
The healthcare market in China comprises healthcare organizations (hospitals, nursing
homes, diagnostic centers, dental hospitals, and clinics), persons (doctors, dentists, nurses
and other caregivers) and health insurance providers. The hospital system in China follows a
three tier system (Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary) according to the level of services
required by patients. Treatment of minor ailments and community service is provided by
primary hospitals. Patients are referred to secondary or tertiary hospitals depending on the
seriousness.
Although, the major investment in the healthcare industry in China is made by the private
sector, the public sector plays a major role in providing healthcare services. Those urban
employees who are covered under the government-operated basic medical insurance
systems are provided with medical facilities at a low
