1. Introduction
A Drug Eluting Stent (DES) is a prosthetic device coated with an anti-proliferative and
immuno-suppressive drug placed into the coronary artery (blood vessel carrying oxygen-
rich blood to the myocardium in the heart) following angioplasty (widening a narrowed or
obstructed artery).
Drug Eluting Stents consist of stent platform, coating, and drug. The stent platforms are
expandable metal alloy framework with mesh-like designs for the expansion, flexibility, and
ability to enlarge openings for the arteries. The coating comprises polymer, which holds and
releases the drug into the arterial wall by contact transfer. The drug coating includes
platelet aggregation inhibitor (usually ticlopidine or clopidogrel), which eliminates the risk of
stent thrombosis. The drug released blocks cell proliferation; thus, prevents restenosis.
Drug Eluting Stent was developed to replace bare-metal stents, as the tissue growth over
the stent eventually leads to re-blockage. It is used for the treatment of heart patients to
prevent the need for more-invasive procedures, such as coronary artery bypass surgery.
This further reduces the need for repeated hospitalization and angioplasty procedures, thus
reducing risks due to complications such as heart attack and stroke.
