1. Introduction
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based radio navigation system that provides
reliable positioning, navigation, and timing services to the users. GPS calculates the
geographic position (longitude, latitude, and sometimes altitude) by signal broadcast from
constellation of satellites that is further received and used by GPS receiver. The receiver,
with an antenna, is tuned to the frequencies of transmitted signal. The received signal is
then fed in the processor along with a display screen to map the location or calculate the
time taken to reach the destination. The information is then be used by various systems
such as computer systems, communication devices, etc., for different functions.
GPS applications vary from standalone applications to integrated applications. These
applications include navigation, tracking, surveying, mapping, etc. One of the major factors
for the growth of GPS is increase in the demand of mobile location technologies. Further,
timing and location capabilities of GPS account for its growth in applications such as disaster
relief & emergency services, banking, and power grid control. The automotive and consumer
industries also have a large demand for GPS.
GPS is evolving from being a product to being a feature; and amidst recession, companies
are making use of GPS for self monitoring. For example, distribution, shipping and
construction companies can reduce operational and fuel costs of fleet vehicle by
implementing GPS tracking solutions.
This report provides insights about the market estimates of the GPS worldwide, and the
market segmentation based on geographies. It also provides information regarding the
current market trends, growth drivers, and inhibitors in the Global GPS market. For the
market size estimates, only those devices have been considered that operate (partially or
completely) using the GPS chips.
