1. Introduction
Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) is a set of software and computer
systems, which are used to acquire, store, transmit, retrieve, and display digital images and
related patient information from a variety of imaging sources and communicate them over a
network. PACS is mainly used in hospitals and imaging centers. It facilitates seamless
transfer of electronic images and reports through its network, and eases the burden of
storing and retrieving images manually in films.

The electronic medical images are usually stored in DICOM (Digital Imaging and
Communications in Medicine) format. PACS caters to the images from a host of modalities
such as Magnetic Resonance (MR) scanner, Computed Tomography (CT) scanner,
Ultrasound, Nuclear medicine, X-ray, Computed Radiography (CR), Mammography (MG),
Endoscopy (ENDO) and film digitizer. To support different modalities, PACS should
integrated with the existing RIS (Radiology Information System) or HIS (Hospital
Information System).

PACS provides remote access for teleradiology and enables radiologists at different physical
locations to view images and information simultaneously. This in turn helps patients get
access to specialists and the required treatment.
