1. Introduction


ePaper or Electronic Paper display is a portable, reusable electronic display medium, which
has paper like properties like wide viewing angle, high flexibility and no back light. These
displays reflect the incident light, thus consuming less or no power to retain an image but
suffer from low refresh rate.




ePaper is being termed as the future of display technology as it can be read in direct
sunlight and is lightweight, durable, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and flexible.
Such properties have helped the ePaper market to grow when the world market was hit by
the economic slowdown. Further, with new developments such as increasing flexibility and
ability to display all colors, ePapers are set to post higher growth in the future.



ePaper displays are majorly used for eBook readers, however host of other applications are
also being developed. Thus, ePapers are being increasingly found in wristwatches, mobile
phones, newspapers, digital school books and photo frames, information boards, smart
cards, etc. The ePaper applications can be developed by various technologies, with each
having their own pros and cons.



Following are the major ePaper display technologies:

}   Electrophoretic Technology: This display technology works by moving or separating
encapsulated charged particles. When an electric charge is applied across the transparent
cell, the particles move towards the surface bearing opposite charge to that of the
particles. Thus, if the particles move towards the viewing side of the display, they reflect
back the incident light and the display appears white. However, , the display appears dark if
the particles move towards the rear of the display, as the incident light is absorbed by the
colored dye.

}   Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Display Technology: This display technology uses
