1. Introduction
The hospitality sector includes all businesses that provide food, beverages, and/or
accommodation services, and convention centers. It includes hotels, restaurants, pubs, bars
and clubs, contract catering, etc. This industry has grown at a considerable pace in the last
few years. However, at present, it is one of the badly hit industries due to the economic
recession.
In 2008, the global market size of the hospitality industry was $3,500 billion as compared to
$3,570 billion in 2007; thus, registering a decline of 1.9 percent. In 2009, the market is
expected to further decline by 13.7 percent, with recovery starting by the last quarter of
2009. The market is expected to attain a positive growth rate by mid of 2010; and by 2012,

2. Energy Efficiency Market in the Hospitality Sector
The global energy efficiency market in the hospitality sector includes all the revenues
generated by implementation of energy efficient equipment and consultation services
provided for the hotels and restaurants, worldwide.
Globally, the market for energy efficiency products and services for the hospitality sector
was $48 billion in 2008. It is expected to have a slower growth of 5 percent in 2009, as
many hotels and restaurants may delay the plans of adoption of energy efficient equipment.
The market is expected to reach a value of $68 billion, and register a growth rate of about
15 percent by 2012. (Exhibit 2.1)
