1. Introduction
Dialysis is one of the methods to treat End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) which is an
irreversible loss of kidney function. Dialysis includes artificial means for removal of toxins and
excess fluids from the bloodstream.
The process of dialysis is of two types: Hemodialysis and Peritoneal. The Hemodialysis
process includes pumping the blood from a patient’s body through an external machine,
subjecting to dialysis, and returning cleansed blood to the body in a continuous extra-
corporeal blood loop. Thus, dialysis takes place when the blood passes through a dialyzer,
or an artificial kidney. In Peritoneal dialysis, a thin membrane called peritoneum is used,
which lines the abdomen and performs dialysis through a cleansing fluid, which is put into
the patient's abdomen through a small, flexible tube called a peritoneal dialysis catheter.
The products used for Hemodialysis comprise hemodialysis machines, home-use machines,
blood lines, dialyzers, catheter access, AV fistulae access, etc. On the other hand, the
products used for Peritoneal dialysis include peritoneal dialysis machines and peritoneal
transfer sets.
The global Dialysis market is composed of two segments: dialysis products & supplies and
dialysis services. The product & supplies segment accounts for a small portion in the
dialysis market. The services segment holds greater potential to generate more revenues
than the products segment. Owing to such reasons, dialysis product manufacturers are
either acquiring dialysis clinics or becoming vertically integrated dialysis provider.
Worldwide, the number of dialysis patients is growing with the changing demographic
patterns and high prevalence of terminal kidney failure. With secured access to treatment
(such as dialysis) among these patients there is a relatively huge opportunity in this
market. However, the high cost of treatment coupled with lack of insurance coverage in
some countries act as market constraints.
