1. Introduction
Data deduplication is a method of reducing storage needs, by eliminating the redundant or
duplicate data. In this, only a unique instance of the data is retained on storage media,
such as disk or tape. The redundant data, on the other hand, is replaced with a 'pointer' to
the unique data copy. Backup applications benefit the most from Data deduplication, since
they are involved in repeated full backups of an existing file system.
The Data Deduplication market has been rapidly growing. It had performed better than
other data storage and archiving segments during the economics crisis. However, this
market is estimated to grow at a slower rate in the future, as enterprise IT organizations
may have restraints on IT budgets and expenditure.
Data Deduplication provides benefits like lower disk expenditures due to lower storage
requirements. Efficient use of disk space allows for longer disk retention periods, resulting
in better recovery time objectives (RTO) for a longer time; thus, reducing the regular tape
backup requirements. Further, Data Deduplication reduces the amount of data that has to
be sent across a WAN (Wide-Area Network) for remote backups, replication and disaster
recovery. In actual practice, Data Deduplication is often used along with other forms of data
reduction techniques, like conventional compression and delta differencing. These
techniques, taken together, can be very effective for optimizing the use of storage space.
