Global Data Base Management Systems (DBMS) Market 2009-2013

A Database Management System (DBMS) is a database program which manages the incoming data, organizes andmaintains it, and provides effective methods for modifying and retrieval of data by the users. DBMS can be divided into two main categories: Pre-Relational DBMS and Relational DBMS. A Pre-RDBMS (Pre- Relational DBMS) is a traditional DBMS, which uses hierarchical structure or navigation (also known as network) structure. Pre-DBMS runs on a mainframe or the operating environment specified by the vendor. It has a well-defined operations, and an efficient query processing and transaction management components. Further, it is used for large data volumes and high transaction processing. On the other hand, RDBMS (Relational DBMS) consists of data that is structured in database tables, fields, and records. In this, a relationship is created by comparing data (such as, names, address etc.) that are available in the database tables, fields, and records. Moreover, RDBMS has the flexibility to take any two or more files, and generate a new file from the records that meet the matching criteria mentioned in the relationship. DBMS is known to be one the most essential parts of any organization. It has made the work of accessing information very simplified. The users need not type a program to retrieve data or update it, they can do so using the query language on the data. Further, DBMS controls data access, enforces data integrity, maintains concurrency and helps in restoring data from back-ups. This report by Technavio Insights highlights the scope of the DBMS market, along with future forecasts, trends, drivers, and challenges.

1. Introduction

A Database Management System (DBMS) is a database program that manages, organizes
and maintains the incoming data, and provides effective methods to the users for modifying
and retrieving the data.

DBMS can be divided into two categories: Pre-Relational DBMS and Relational DBMS. Pre-
RDBMS (Pre- Relational DBMS) is the traditional DBMS, which uses hierarchical structure or
navigation (also known as network) structure. This DBMS runs on a mainframe or an
operating environment specified by the vendor. It has well-defined operations, and efficient
query processing & transaction management components. Pre-RDBMS is used for large data
volumes and high transaction processing. On the other hand, RDBMS (Relational DBMS)
consists of data that is structured in database tables, fields, and records. In this, a
relationship is created by comparing data (such as, names, address etc.) available in the
database tables, fields, and records. Moreover, RDBMS has the flexibility to generate a new
file by taking any two or more files from the records that meet the matching criteria
mentioned in the relationship.
DBMS has now become the most essential parts of any organization. It has made the work
of accessing information very simplified. The users need not type a program to retrieve data
or update it, they can do so using the query language on the data. Further, DBMS controls
data access, enforces data integrity, maintains concurrency and helps in restoring data from
back-ups.
DBMS continues to stay in demand in the market. As the need to store and manage more
information has increased, DBMS has been deployed to manage and reduce the cost of
database. Further, with the help of DBMS, Database has become streamlined and effective,
it has moved from physical applications to web services to deliver better efficiency. In
addition, vendors are adding more features (like in-memory) to the DBMS application, to
meet the increasing demand of the customers.
