Additive fabrication refers to a class of manufacturing processes, in which a solid object is

Additive fabrication is also known as solid freeform fabrication, layered manufacturing,
rapid manufacturing, rapid prototyping, or 3D printing. In this type of fabrication, a solid
model is manufactured directly from a digital 3D model, which is created through the
Computer Aided Design (CAD) software. This 3D CAD model is converted into many thin
layers, and the manufacturing equipment uses this geometric data to build each layer
sequentially, until the object is completed.

Additive fabrication is carried out using a number of techniques. Some of them include
Electron Beam Melting (EBM), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), and Selective Laser
Sintering (SLS). In EBM, the solid model parts are manufactured by having the metal
powder melted layer by layer, through a beam of electron in high vacuum. Further, FDM is
based on additive principle, which states that the material has to be laid down in layers for
building objects. On the other hand, in SLS, high power laser is used for fusing tiny
particles of ceramic, metal, or plastic powders into mass; representing the desired 3D
object.
