1. Market Size & Forecast
Client hardware includes the following:
Personal Computers - A personal computer (PC) is a computer whose original sales
price, size, and capabilities make it useful for individuals, intended to be operated
directly by an end user, with no intervening computer operator.
PDAs - PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) refers to any mobile hand-held device that
provides computing and information storage and retrieval capabilities for personal or
business use, often for keeping schedule calendars and address book information
handy.
Thin Clients - A thin client (sometimes called as a lean client) is a client computer in
client-server architecture networks, which depends primarily on the central server
for processing activities, and mainly focuses on conveying input and output between
the user and the remote sever. It is devoid of CD-ROM players, diskette drives, and
expansion slots.
Workstations - A workstation, such as a Unix workstation, RISC workstation is a
high-end desktop or deskside microcomputer designed for technical applications like
engineering applications (CAD/CAM), desktop publishing, software development, and
other types of applications that require a moderate amount of computing power and
relatively high quality graphics capabilities. Workstations are primarily intended to
be used by one person at a time, although they can usually be accessed remotely by
other users when necessary.
According to TechNavio, the market for client hardware is forecast to reach $249,189.3
million by 2010 from $219,342.1 million in 2007, growing at a CAGR of 4.3 percent over the
forecast period (exhibit 1.1).
