Response to the Digital Economy Future Directions Consultation Paper (Please forward your responses to DEFutureDirections@dbcde.gov.au by Wednesday 11 February 2009, clearly indicating any material that is commercial-in-confidence.) The paper highlights the significant growth potential for SMEs through the adoption of eBusiness. The paper also identifies SMEs’ major concerns about e-commerce. In addressing the question … How can a greater adoption of eBusiness by SMEs be realised? It is useful to understand SME concerns and investigate whether these concerns can be addressed in part or in full. A possible solution to addressing a large number of the SMEs’ concerns may lie in providing SMEs’ with a fully functioning eBusiness Web presence where they are able to display and trade their goods and services without being concerned about upfront costs associated with the establishment of a Web presence, security, reliability, flexibility etc. Another way to think about this is to make available a fully functional virtual eShopping mall including the provision of payment of receipting functionality to SMEs. The SMEs would be responsible for the maintenance of their goods and services listing. Individual SME sites within the larger environment should also be able to customise their site to personalise their respective Web presence. This proposed eBusiness environment would ideally be sponsored and backed by the federal Government and be provided at a heavily discounted cost or free to SMEs. What better incentive would there be for SMEs to establish an eBusiness presence. This would be an ideal way for the current government to show support for SMEs’ while kick starting a SME eBusiness revolution. The site could also be promoted to consumers for its state of the art secure layer e.g. a safe place to do eBusiness. Robert Staples ICT Consultant TAM Computing Pty Ltd Mobile: 0439995015
