Completed Your Financial Aid Application: What Happens Next?
Most students and their families struggle so much just to get financial aid that they
forget about what happens afterwards. Here are some things you need to think about as
you start receiving that financial loan for your education.
       It does not end there
          1. You will be expected to repay. It may be common sense that any loan must
be repaid but most students often pay minimal attention to such
inevitabilities. It is essential to remember that sometimes one’s job may be
inadequate to service prior student loans. Sometimes interests keep accruing
and before you know it, you are overwhelmed by debt. So take your time to
choose your loan terms and try as much as possible to pay up in due time.
          2. The amount due will not be altered by scholarships. Sometimes some
students may presume that the amount of money that they have to pay their
respective financial institutions will go down dramatically if scholarships are
awarded. Such thinking is misguided because only institutions benefit while
all other groups are left behind.
          3. Renegotiation must be tactical. If one feels unhappy with the kind of loan
that one received, then it is always possible to negotiate. However, parents
should not just march into a financial aid office and claim that they have
received a lucrative offer from another college. This is likely to repel the aid
officer and ruin chances of getting a better deal. Furthermore, one should
avoid stating explicitly that they want to negotiate the terms of their student
loans. Instead, a letter should be sent indicating some personal problem that
will require the family’s attention. One can then see the aid officer in person
and request politely for aid change.
       Keep in mind that
Everything does not end upon receipt of the award letter because the real work
begins here.
